Other info you might want to consider in advising me. Price point: no more than $1500 for a new pair, significantly less for a used pair. My other equipment: McCormack .5 amp, CJ 10B, preamp.
Thanks.

Why would you say significantly less for a used pair, when 1500 on the used market will buy so much more than new? Example, though out of your range, I bought my Sonus faber Extremas just over 5K. When new, they were 10K+, closer to 12 with stands.I'm just saying get all the speaker you can get for your set budget.
Hmmm Lowther DX3 in tall box would come in at your price point, 2 cu' with a large port, at floor level, bass reflex would work, even if you have the boxes made for you by a woodworking shop. Right up against the wall, they should couple with the floor/wall juction for decent bass. 99db/1w
www.carolinaaudio.com JTM's among the very best speakers at any price. They can be placed up against the back wall if you want and are only 4 1/2" deep. They sound great 8-9 ft apart. Amazing coherence and transparency with great honest bass.
I have had a variety of Meadowlarks and Audio Physic speakers up into the $5500 price range and these $1500 Carolina's are by far the best.
