My cousin recently received two letters from Germany, requesting materials purchased on Ebay be sent. He doesn't sell anything on Ebay, and asked that I look into it. The one letter contained a check for about 35 Euros, which I told him not to deposit, because then they have the routing number, account number, etc.
The second letter (different sender)contained $45.00 in CASH!
I returned both letters with the check and the cash, and explained (in German) that they had obviously gotten the wrong information, etc.
Now my question: what could they have been trying to do by sending cash? I understand the check scam, but cash??? Maybe I'm paranoid, and it was an honest mistake?

The scammer stole your cousins ID to open a Paypal account. Two of his victims sent payment by mail, instead.
