Hi,
sticking to the analogue medium and listening to classical music, both on vinyl and shellack, I woulkd like to have some of my records on tape. I own a vintage Alpine AL-85 deck, but I am looking for ultimate quality.
Who can comment on the quality of 2-track ree-to-reel machines (with and without noise reduction units) like:
Tascam 32
Revox A700
Revox PR99
ASC 6002
OrtariAny comment welcome.
Thanks!Alfred Forkel

I hate to be vague, but any of those decks will give excellent sound, especially when used with DBX noise reduction.
From your list, I would pick the Revox and Otari in that order. I've done a side by side comparison of a Nakamichi 682ZX and the Tascam 32 running at 15 ips. I preferred the sound of the Nakamichi over the Tascam.
I would look for a Studer A80 Mark IV or Studer 807 or 827. Recording studios are trying to unload their analog gear and Studer still backs their product well. Plus there are the Studer pages on the web to aid you in finding spare parts. It is a big machine and takes up a lot of space. The only problem is the avaliability of tape which I worry some of the majors will withdraw their offerings. I/4" might be the last to go. BasF is the best tape now made. Cordially, James
