I'm thinking about buying either a 'Sony PCM-R300 Dat' or a 'Tascam DA-30MKII Dat'. Does anyone know if one of these is better than the other? Or maby you have some experience with them, and have a suggestion?
I'm gonna use the DAT for for plain Mastering and Storage of recorded material.
Thanks
Follow Ups:
I have been using a DA30MKII for a couple of years now with no troubles at all. There may be better machines out there but the Tascam are fine.
I gave away my broken da30. Nothing but problems for me. I like the R300 except the drawer assembly seems cheap to me. The R500 is a very good unit. I am happy with my Panasonics but they are hard to find now as they stopped producing them. Another suggestion would be a fostex d5 and outboard AD/DA such as the dio or other of your liking. All of my dats now sit around now that I have a masterlink with large HD now. 50 hours and backups are on CD which is much less likely to have errors than my older dats.

I've owned a Tascam DA30 and a Sony PCM-R500, (I'm guessing the guts of the R300 are almost identical to the R500). I found the DA conversion on the DA30 slightly dull at the top end, the Sony is juxt that little bit more open sounding. Now that it seems Sony machines don't seem to suffer from the transport problems of old, I would recommend the Sony wholeheartedly. IMHO its a superior machine, and certainly ranks amongst the best I've ever owned or used.Regards
