ok, a crest vs900, and a crown ce2000. both exhibit steady clip on power up with no input/no load. neither is under warranty. i live in rhode island. i have no schematics for the units, otherwise i'd dig in and diy.would rather not ship back to factory, due to quite substantial weight, but will do it if i have to.
any advice appreciated!

Can't tell you where as I live in FL, but it definately sounds like you ahve a toasted output transistor. The fact htat you have the same problem on both amps leads me to wonder if perhaps you are trying to drive to large a load or, inversely, have too little impedance (3 ohms/less) run continually. I've used both and both were pretty 'bullet proof' but any amp will fry in either of the above scenarios. To your question of where, any 'electronic service clinic' type of 'repair' shop can easily diagnose this problem/fix.
thanks for the advice.in this case, i picked up both of the dead amps for a song, and i have no idea of their past history.
too bad you can't just pop out the output xistor like an old tube, and pop another one in. ahh, progress.
