You mentioned that you have not been impressed by powered computer speakers. I'm curious as to whether you have audition either the Monsoon IM702 or Swan M200 speakers?
Follow Ups:
No, I've never heard either speaker. I'm starting to think though that I'd like to have the flexibility in having a modular system. If I don't like the speakers I can later replace them and use them with the receiver or vice versa. For this reason, I'd like to rule out powered speakers altogether.-JOFT
You might want to consider shielded monitors from PSB, Paradigm, Axiom, even the Radio Shack RCA LX55 which you might find for $100 - $150 a pair.

The REveals are well shielded for use in multi media systems AND they are good quality professional studio monitors. Be prepared, they can be brutally honest with your mix, but that is exactly what you want from studio monitors. But they are not at all fatiguing like many other nearfields. Give 'em a listen.
digital? I'm still not sure about transistors....
Check out the NHT Super Ones, they are very matter of fact and you won't have to refi-your home to get a pair of them, go to a local store and check'em out
That's my 2 cents,enjoy
