The basic removal of drive was relatively painless. I put in a 40 gig Seagate 5400rpm. It had a similar seek time and many of the masterlinks ship with a seagate oem (mine came witha fujitsu). I had to add a jumper to the hard drive to make it limit itself to 32GB as this is all the masterlink can use. It did not recognize the drive without doing this. Set the drive to master. The only pain in the butt was making a new os cd. Its really difficult on a mac since Toast titanium wont make usable discs. Thats all I got for burning. I made it on a friends pc. I now have 51 hours of 44.1/16 bit audio.

Follow Ups:
Frost,I browsed around a bit a saw a seagate 30 gig 5400 rpm for
$119, would this fit the bill to avoid the jumper work
around???
What is the difference between an IDE and a SCSI,
How about 7,200 versus 5,400??As you can see, I don't have much hardware experience,
but it would be super cool to have some mega storage on
my MasterLink!!! Could really use the playlist feature
then.

yes, this should fit the bill. The jumper problem isnt really a problem tho as it would take me 2 seconds to fix now that I know. The difference between IDE and scsi is the type of connection. You will want an IDE only. nothing else will work. As far as speed, 7200/5400 youll want the fastest in your computer but the cheaper , cooler running 5400 is better for the masterlink. This is more than fast enough to do 24/96- were just working with 2 track here.
Good Luck, for me the new os disc was the most work. make sure yours works before you take the drive out.

My masterlink HD went down after 1.5 years of use, just out of warranty of course, but Alesis did cover it for me. I sent the unit in for repaires in Oct. and was promised two week turnaround. In January after many calls I was promised a 10G HD. When my machine was returned it had a 20 gig HD which gives me 30 hours of red book or 19 hours of high res. and was loadeed with V2.02 os. it is working fine and the extra recording time is just what I needed.

I have upgraded my masterlink to 20 gb now am trying to upgrde cdr, release notes indicate that sony crx 175 a/e are supported but it only reads wont write anyone know more? The read speeds are very fast 40x. would be great if it works because wite speed would be 24x
