I am a QUAD63 lover, going to upgrade my system with a good tube amp.Searching the database of this forum I found people claiming that OTLs are the best in the world for Quads, other stating that, due to the impedance of these babies, OTLs should be avoided from the beginning.
What is your opinion?
Follow Ups:
The Quad 63s and OTLs are superb together. Like all ESLs, the Quad 63s have a falling impedance at high frequencies. This in theory is not good for an OTL, but the fall-off in impedance occurs at frequencies where the power demand is very minimal, and in practise I have never heard a problem, i.e., the hf will be clean, detailed, and extended.
I have some moving coil speakers with a 4 ohm impedance (min 3.7) and am using some Fourier Panthere OTL's with a Zero autoformer at 4X. So the nominal impedance is now 16 ohms, which presents an easier load to the amp.
I don't think one would "need" Zeros with the Quad 63s and most OTLs, Atma-sphere S30s excepted (because they have a rather high output Z even compared to other OTLs). I use quotes because it is always possible that one might subjectively prefer the sonics WITH Zeros vs without in a given situation, so I would never say "never".
Hi,Thought I'd jump in and ask a more specific question re. the Berning.
I run a Futterman H-3 into the ESL's and ocassionally the USA monitors with very good results. Thinking about my last OTL and the Berning sounds good with its low heat output and innovative design...any ideas on whether the ESL's and the USA monitors will work with the Berning?
I take it that by the acronym "ESL" you meant to refer to the Quad 63s. Certainly the ZH270 would be an ideal choice to drive either the Quad 63s or the derivative "USA Monitors". The ZH270 can drive any ESL I know of handily, except for the issue of power. For Sound Lab speakers, probably you would want to use a pair of ZH270s strapped for mono operation.
which brand you use and what is the power ?
thanks
I personally use a pair of Atma-sphere MA240 monoblock amplifiers that have been so highly modified by me that the circuit bears only a general resemblance to the original product. The power output is about 120W per channel into 8 ohms. I use them to drive Sound Lab M1 ESLs. You don't need that much power to drive the Quad 63s, but it wouldn't hurt either. I have heard the Quad 63s driven by the Cary 845 SET, which I think makes about 50W, and the sound was superb.
