Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
80.32.156.111
Hello,I have a big problem, I bought two weeks ago a new pair of 2805, after a week of use one of the speakers downed 5dB the level, I reversed all the connections and the problem remains. I use a 40W tube amplifier, no speaker protection problems. Any idea?
Follow Ups:
It definitely sounds like there is a problem with the speaker and it's not due to room acoustics. Tough break. It must be frustrating.I suggest returning them to the dealer and ask for a new pair. They may offer to repair the speaker but that should be okay if it's the electronics at fault. The symptoms do point to the electronics.
it should still be under warrenty.
I would suspect that you have a problem with the power supply that provides the static charge to the diaphragm. If the diaphragm is not fully charged, stats tend to sound weak in output.I know it is very discouraging to have a problem, but, by their very nature, manufacturing defects do tend to show up early, not later. If a product survives and works for the first few months, that product will probably not have a problem for a very long time thereafter (it won't "wear out" for a long time). Inform the dealer, you probably have to have the speaker repaired.
By the way, I've heard this speaker and I personally think the new models (2805 and 2905) are the best speakers Quad has produced. Certainly they are a lot better than any of the 63 and modded 63s I've heard.
If it is not a problem with set-up or the gear here are a few possibilities. The power supply has gone bad in the speaker. This would result in a loss of output.
The polyswitch(FS2) on the input of the speaker has gone bad. The internal resistance of the switch would be high causing a drop in output.
Or a panel(s) has starting leaking excessively. This would cause excessive drain on the power supply preventing the speaker from reaching a full charge. A drop in output would be the result. Generally there would be noise from the offending panel(s) if excessive panel leakage is the problem.
Good luck with the speaker.
Obviously, the first thing you need to do is swap the speakers, left to right, right to left. Then see if the problem follows the speaker.I had a similar problem once with my esl 63's. I would've sworn one of the speakers is way off. Now I'd owned these speakers for 20 years, and had themm in this listening room for close to 5. Despite that it turned out to be a problem of placement and acoustics. I adjusted the positioning of the speakers, and the problem disappeared.
If you've never owned Quads before it can be difficult at first to appreciate how room dependent these things are - partly because of that rear sound wave. I'm not exaggerating when I say that moving as little as a couple of inches off axis can completely change the character of the sound you experience.
Good luck.
Hello Bob,Thanks for your help, but I changed the position of the speakers :-(, first I put the speakers in the middle of the room for measure, and next changed the position, the low level loudspeaker is always the same. I started with the two at the same level, but in a week the level of one dropped (12 days old speakers).
This is my first pair of Quad ESL (But I had other planars).
Then it's back to the dealer they go. Since it's been only two weeks, your dealer should glady replace them with a fresh pair.Back when I got my 63's, you could only buy them as a pair. I had a bad speaker right out of the box, so I had to bring them both back to the dealer and get a fresh pair. This may or may not be Quad's policy today, so I'd check their website.
And insist on a replacement. There's no reason you should have to wait on their repair.
