Hi, I am looking for a good sounding 2-channel SACD player for under $500.Does anybody have any idea as whats the brand and where can I purchase it ? Thanks
Simon
Follow Ups:
I think Oade Brothers still has the 775 for $185 - - HURRY.They have plenty of the 222ES for $295 - a steal.
You can't go wrong with either of these players.
Good luck!
$295 for the 'C222ES? I thought Oade Bros. was selling it for $320. Is it $295 + $25 shipping?
nt
I bought it 2 weeks ago and if you look at other peoples opinions on it mine included, this is the biggest steal in audio pricing history. It is a wonderful player for even under $200!!! It is even better than the 222ES in some respects. If you can find a CE775 get one by all means, you CANT go wrong with it I guarantee it!
All the good comments about this player make me glad that I ordered one (new) at ~170$.For now I don't plan on using it much for SACDs as the prices are still too high, but it'll make my system more futureproof (unless something bad happens to the format) and should sound good enough on standard redbook.
Regards,
mike
Just wonder what aspects of the SCD-CE775 are better than the 222ES other than value?
The only differences that I am aware of between the 775 and the 222 are:Extra transformer for the 222
Heavier, more substantial faceplate for the 222
Gold plated output jacks for the 222
Slightly larger chassis for the 222Everything else about these players is identical and the 222 is a make-from 775. I listened to both of these players with fairly decent speakers and electronics and could not hear any differences. I would put the cost savings of the 775 into mods that will make a sonic difference - soft recovery diodes, better output coupling caps, low jitter clock.

as a diplomat by any chance? ;-)
The 222ES also has a coax out and ES warranty...Todd
Can I do any of these mods myself? I would hate to send a brand new player off to someone I don't know and have to wait several weeks to get it back. What can I do to improve sound for about $50?
Also, does anyone have a schematic or BOM?
most tweakers will probably replace these op amps but a quick 1st pass tweak would be adding a pull-down R on the op amp outputs for class A bias (the 2114 is rated for 60 mA so i would aim for 3-10 mA, which is higher than recommended for most other op amp types) --current source bias would be even betteri would also look into bootstrapping the mute transistor base drives if removing them altogether is unwise (anyone remove them yet? how much power-on thump? -- got to be some reason sony uses 2 section mute)
I will open up the player this weekend and report back. Off the top of my head, the output coupling caps would probably be the easiest mod (and the cheapest). They are 47 mdf caps so black gates would be the obvious choice. You could try Solens but I don't think they would fit.
If you look further down, you will see lots of threads on the 775, which is less than $200. Problem is, I think they are getting hard to find.Randy
