I just recently purchase the Jolida 1000 RC for my Von Schweikert Audio VR2's speakers with DH Labs cables and interconnects. The speakers are rated at 87 bd efficicency. Looking for a good recommendation for a cd player that will match my current system. I had the Shanling T-200 cd player but I sold it to make an upgrade. Would love to stay with a tube cd player, also I was looking at the Jolida 100 for the cd however I dont know how the 100 is rated overall. Also, looking into Naim, Rega. I will buy probably a "used" unit or new. My budget is at $1,200.Looking forward to a good recommendation, used or new unit! Thanks

But if you wanted to move up to a 21st century format that is HiRez, then many here can give you good advice based on their own experience. And for the $$ you are budgetting - any SACD player at that price level will also be a very good CD player, and certainly equal to a CD only player at the same price!
This is not my personal experience.
The other day I was comparing the top of the range Primare SACD player versus the Primare CD31 cd player.
On standard cds the SACD player was not as good.
I had similar experience in the past. I never heard a SACD player that can match a really top class cd player playing std cds.
Obviously the SACD machine wins playing multichannels SACD dics.
If your goal is to buy SACD dics sure go and buy an SACD player, on the other hand if you have a huge collection of cd, I would stick to a cd only machine. If you can afford both, then this is the solution.
I had a large collection of CD and still opted for the XA777ES for $2k when it became available. Considering it did stereo and MCH SACD and CD playback was better or equivalent to what I could audition in that price range for a CDP, I choose the XA777ES.Another example is the Marantz SA8260. Hard to beat that player for the price!
Manufacturers I feel are aware they need to include good CD playback for the player to compete in the market.
My 777 with your VSE V mod in my system, CD can trounce the sound of SACD in most systems. Heck, I'd almost throw in vinyl, but we all know how testy those guys can get. So in some regards, CD can be considered high rez. Please bear in mind that I have attended several thousand live musical events since 1990, so I do know what I am listening to. Also, I do not believe that unamplified is truly the only measure of reproduction. I'd much rather bring Hendrix back to life for a gig than say Maria Callas.
You mean that on your Upgraded 777ES playing the CD layer of a Hybrid sounds better than playing the SACD layer?Or do you mean that the music you love (available only on CD) sounds better than the artists available on SACD???
Personally I would also prefer to hear Jimmy live than Callas - but as I blissed out on a 1965 Miles Davis live gig last night - so if i could pick one musician to bring back - he'd be my current choice!
That is not exactly what I meant Allen. How CD sounds currently on my system, is better than SACD that I have heard in most, if not all other systems. Mind you, at high end shows they rarely, if ever, play SACD. What good is the absolute best front end if the downstream components can't continue to bring out it's fine qualities. So when someone raves about the qualities of a component under test, saying that it is responsible for the great sounds, they are only partially correct. We all know that ultimately the final sound of any system is a combination of the qualities, good and bad, of all of the combined components + the room interactions.I have yet to hear dbt300's rig, but finally will next weekend. I fully expect his to rock.
I hear you about the Miles stuff. He'd be my first choice as well to bring back to life. I just brought up Hendrix because everybody keeps saying that anything electrified can't be considered a sound standard, hence my mentioning him and my exposure to much live stuff.
My fave Miles SACDs are the live Funny Valentine from '63 and Someday My Prince Will Come. The Prince disc is fine and if I were to suggest one Miles disc to someone who has not been exposed to his stuff, I'd choose this one over KOB.
Just curious as I'm unsure what players you have listened to.It was not the experience I had with the XA777ES when I bought that player for $2k a number of years ago. I suppose there are always exceptions! :)
Many. No need to be PC. I was making comparisons between ultimate system sound. Anyone that can not hear the differences between CD and SACD probably does not bother to be here at the Asylum. But such comparisons are only valid in the context of the same system. Heck there are some systems that sound so good with even CD, that their qualities far exceed others with SACD. I am stating that I am now there. Ditto for the claimed qualities of LP. Having been to many high end shows and hearing people's home rigs, I have yet to experience the mystic qualities claimed for LP. There are always excuses. My point was basically people praise the qualities of certain front ends when their downstream components really aren't that transparent. They may not even be that dynamic. We all have heard (and even made) claims of how great certain front ends are in comparison to others. Well if you have crappy speakers, what difference does it really matter? We are only making such a claim in the context of our own system. Would LP sound better on my system than SACD? Probably not. I'd suspect that it would sound rather lifeless since it is already very smooth and I have no issues with glare. Besides, I find it comical that there is a market out there for a 50 dollar album of any format.
Like you stated Robetc88, comparisons should be made on a level playing field. Comparing a 50 dollar LP on a system that has been tweaked for years for the format with the equivalent SACD may not really be such a valid comparisson.
That's the one I was talking about!
of fantastic musicians playing fantastic music.
Oz man...The rig is sounding very good to me, but that is really all that matters. The bass treatment panels that I installed from GIK Acoustics have really helped the sound of the room, and in turn the sound of the rig. People need to concentrate their efforts on the sound of their room and stop bying those $10k components trying to get better sound.
One day I will have either a Fully Modded VSE or Modwright source player in my setup. For now the modifications I had by Dan Wright made a big difference in how my source sounds. How good does it sound?? Well next weekend you will find out!!!
I can't agree more DBT. For that matter, what good is one of those stratospherically high buck diamond or ceramic based driver loudspeakers if the interactions of the room kill the soundfield? Mine have less resolution, but they attempt to compensate for the room. It is the end result that we are after, isn't it?I know DBT's rig sound killer because he says so.
My budget is $1,000
