I bought a Oppo 981 and before I could set it up, my 9000ES died.I've listened to the Oppo 981 for about one week now, but I must use my memory to compare it to my six year old, stock Sony 9000ES.
Overall, both sound quite good, but they sound different. The Oppo seems to have greater overall clarity. The highs standout. But at times, the highs have an edginess to their sound.
The Sony seems to have a more solid bass and smoother highs, but the highs do not seem as extended.
It was nice to listen to 5.1 SACDs using the analog outs. However, even though I own over 100 SACDs, I was surprised as to how few are 5.1.
I have a 50" Vizio HD Plasma TV. The Oppo upconverted video (using HDMI) is slightly more detailed than the Sony (using component cables and 480P). However, the Sony colors appear more solid and rich. When I sit 12-14 feet away, I can't tell the different in clarity, but I can still tell the difference in color.
I know that my Sony is 6 years old and I didn't allow time for the Oppo to break in. But these are my first impressions.
Note that the Oppo plays CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, DVD-As (I had two), and 5.1 SACDs. The 9000ES could not play any of these.
In addition, the 9000ES cost and weighs over 5 times as much as the Oppo.
Follow Ups:
As I am sure you are aware, when you use the Oppo to upconvert, you are comparing it to the built-in upscaler in your plasma after it receives 480p from the Sony, not to the Sony alone. I have long been curious about the video comparison, so thanks for the post.
i have both 9000es and oppo 971.
connected to 720p projector difference is very big.
Oppo's scaler/deinterlacer is way better.

Isn't Divx some sort of television, or digital TV recording system?

.
Not to be confused with DIVX.It seems to be a popular file format for peer to peer sharing of video. I don't have a lot of stuff in this format, just 1-2 Star Wars fan parodies.
Very good. Thanks. I was confused with DIVX - not that I really knew what it was, as I'm not into DVDs. But I recalled that it had failed.

Geoff
Divx is named for the failed Circuit City technology, sort of a mockery of what was considered a bad idea, one that quickly failed. The common variety divx file, which may have file extension divx, or more often is stored in an avi container, is a variant of mpeg 4. This is a compressed video format similar to mpeg 2, which is the format used on almost all video DVDs. Mpeg 4 is considered more advanced in terms of its compression technology. In general divx files have a fixed rate of bits/second, which makes them suited for streaming, whereas mpeg 2 generally has a variable bit rate. I'm not sure if these are fixed rules for mp2 and mp4, but that's what I've seen.
Divx is free. Its primary use is to store ripped video DVDs as shorter and more convenient files, with minimum loss of quality. People rip the mpeg 2 from a DVD, transcode it to Divx and store it on hard drive. Most videos on file sharing networks on in the divx format.
and (2) Divx. Relax on the trigger finger.
You should know better than to assume you know what's in another's heart from a small amount of evidence before you. You were wrong then, and you are wrong now.

Geoff
