The Pioneer Elite DV-45A started out at MSRP of $1500 (I believe), soon selling for MSRP $700. They must be about to discontinue this machine as it is selling on the internet for >= $300. And I just purchased it for a bit more at my favorite local high end store. The 45A universal player has been compared in sound quality to the still very expensive Marantz and Phillips machines. So it seems a true audiophile bargan at these prices.
I am very satisfied with the final CD sound which I am routing into my MSB DAC. The 45A's native SACD sound is just about the same or a bit better than the +DAC standard CD sound.
And of course I can't route the DSD into a DAC. So I wonder what modifications one would suggest to improve the 5.1 audio out (actually I am only interested in modifying the 2 + center channel)
Is anyone still doing mods on this machine?
which mods are worth while?-power supply and simple audio out seem interesting tweeks.

thanks everyone for the info!I had bought the Pioneer DV45a on an impulse buy with hopes of upgrading from my present system, but after a week I concluded that the sound of the DV45a was not as good as my my present rig. so I've returned the DV45a. (yes the 45a is a good machine, but my older DV414 with outboard MSB DAC was still better after all these years)
now I am dreaming of a Denon 2900 for the SACD playback, any thoughts?
Pioneer DV-47Ai a year ago and ever since is only $600 on sites such as pricegrabber.com. I got mine for $425 used mint shipped to me, since seller worked for AV retailer and just paid the shipping. Nice condition, 2 remotes, good overall unit. I love it for that price.Nearly no one mods it. Alex Peychev might, and another modder I found. I have hesitated to mod mine until researching it more. A series of posts here state that DV-59 is much better for sound. Most of the good modders are too busy doing true high end. Booo.
I use mine as a redbook CDP and occasional SACD P and then watch music DVD's and a rare movie.
i paid $250 for one off Audiogon over a year ago...it's ok but the SACD1000 kills it...right now... (frantic sounds of wood knocking follow)...
.
Your MSRPs are closer to the 47Ai's price than the 45A's. I got one of the very first 45As in Sep 02 for $450. List was $499. They have been available for $399 or less for over a year now. The original 47A was somewhere around $799 list, while the 47Ai (the big brother of the 45A) was somewhere around $1000-1200 list. The price on the 47Ai dropped to around $700-800 after the 59AVi came out.As for mods, I know Musical Concepts has sort of specialized in the Pioneer players. Their mods are mainly parts swaps and are fairly inexpensive. Also, I think I recall Ric Schultz and Dan Wright have some experience with this machine. Although Dan doesn't work on them anymore, Ric might. Just guessing though.
