Interesting, never saw that in the reviews.
Follow Ups:
No, I still own my HCA-2...It was in fact the early version HCA-2 power amp combined with relatively sensitive Tannoy speakers (91dB). I suspect the hiss would be less noticable with less sensitive speakers (so Stereophile may not have noticed). I had an early dealer demo unit side by side with a newer unit that I purchased. The early unit hissed and the later one did not.
FACT: Eary HCA-2's were rated at 30dB gain. Later versions had their gain reduced by 6dB which helped minimize the hiss. PS Audio will mod older units FREE OF CHARGE if it is within the warranty period. I got this info direct from PS Audio.
Accuphase DP65V cdp or Denon DVD-5900 Universal
PS Audio PCA-2 Pre - Krell KSA50S - Tannoy D500 spkrs
Mine also exhibited this anomaly and it was very annoying. It wasn't just a continuous hiss but sort of like a zzzzzzzz sound included that was buzzing along with the hiss... I tried aftermarket power cords, the PS300 regenerator and still it was there..I have a dedicated AC line for my rig and the AC is also stable, so wasn't due to a bad sinewave..
I thought they rated this class a? So much for them. Who was the reviewer? Thought it was Rubinson. Maybe it's on their website.Any guess as to the cause? Unfiltered artifact of the digital process?
I think i know the sound you guys mean.... i CAN hear this, but i have to be about 1ft or less away form my Speakers to hear it... What i am hearing is a tizz with the highs on SACD only... almost like a blown tweeter...This is there/not there depending on Source material... On the Opus3 Showcase SACD (one of the first i bought) it is there about half of the time. On JT Hourglass or October Road it is there more often than not...
I have a feeling that it is the 5900 doig this... DVD, DVD-A, HDCD, Redbook do NOT have this happening... regardless of the filter setting. I should be getting some Spendor S5E next week and will be able to tell if speaker sensitivity has an affect on the problem. It's almost like gate noise on the high-end... I recently sent back the 5900 for repair because it started having issues with playback. They did an awesome job. Not only will it play-back everything i toss at it, but the detail/air has increased A LOT! I will try to break it in further to see/hear if the problem goes away or not.
My 3910 has the same problem, but only in the CD direct mode.
I suppose it is due to DSD direct without passing through PCM filter.
I think this is the reason why many SACD player need to output via PCM to remove these noises.
