I recently had the occasion to A/B the US 20Bit versions with the japanese K2 and 24Bit versions of "Coltrane" and "Ballads". The tonal balance of all the remasterings was very different and some of the japanese discs sounded rather extreme (too bright or too dark). The US versions were always the best tonally. Also from the point of view of dynamics or detail, the japanese versions offered no advantage.
I found the Crescent and Coltrane digital K2s to be tonally more substantial and warm. By comparison, the 20-bit domestic versions sounded tinny and shallow, a little drier which may have given the illusion of providing more detail. I guess we'd have to hear the original tape to know which transfer is closest to the source, but I preferred the digital K2s. The piano especially had more heft to it. It reminded me a little of the DCCs.
