Hi, can anyone tell me if there is a level 5 mod in Allen Wright's VSEI mods for the Sony SCD-1 player. I have heard rumours of one. I have level 1 and 2 mods and I would like to get level 4 if it would improve the sound even more. I can't believe how good it sounds with the mods I now have. Redbook cd's come pretty close to SACD's.
Follow Ups:
We have one coming later in the year - but if you only have Level 2, then coming up to the current Level 4 (info at the link) will be a major sonic increase. And if you talk nicely to your agent he most likely will bring it up to the (unannounced) Level 4.5, which is what they are installing now while still calling it Level 4.Level 5 will not be a replacement for Level 4/4.5 but rather a near double priced ultra version with super quality bits on a teflon circuit board.

Allen, could you clarify exactly what the ".5" includes?
Warren is now modding my SCD-1 with the Level 4 mods. I read somewhere that the ".5" includes a replacement clock for Sony's stock clock used in the SCD-1. Since my SCD-1 has already been modified with the Super Clock II and its dedicated power supply which Warren will keep, will I have the complete 4.5 upgrade? Thanks.
> Warren is now modding my SCD-1 with the Level 4 mods. I read somewhere that the ".5" includes a replacement clock for Sony's stock clock used in the SCD-1. <Actually not. As previosly mentioned here in Hi-Rez, and based on a suggestion from FMAK posted here, we found that the original SONY clock used in the SCD-1/777ES gave better sonics than our replacement TENT clock - when the SONY clock is powered from a very special low noise 5 volt powersupply.
This would indicate to us that:
1/ very low frequency noise in the clock powersupply is a major factor in causing audible jitter effects.
2/ Having the clock VERY physically close to the relevant clock accepting chips also minimises jitter and other artifacts.
Level "4.5" uses the Level 4 signal processing module (without the TENT clock), but with this extra special 5V supply that replaces the junk 3 pin 5V regulator that SONY use to power their clock.

No - because with the SuperClock already installed the ".5" part will be redundant - at least it should be as the SuperClock is claimed to solve the same problems that our ".5" does - and from their promotion and pricing, one hopes it does!
I have only ever had one SuperClock through my own workshop, and that was over a year ago - so I cannot comment on it's performance vis a vis the ".5", but Warren will have a better feeling for it and can counsel you on retaining the SuperClock, or if it doesn't make the grade, offering another solution.
I'm certain that he will provide you with the very best Upgrade option possible in your SCD-1, otherwise he wouldn't be my agent!

That's is why I am wary of changing the clock in my stock player.
please talk to Warren/Bill whocan tell you the exact story - OK?
Thanks Allen. I appreciated detailed clarification. Warren believes that the Super Clock II will work out very well in my Level 4 modification.
For double the cost, what will the added benefits be? Very interesting, as I was just about to get the 4.5. I will now wait for the Level 5, if it is that much better.
To be honest, we don't know as we don't have the teflon board here yet. And won't have until we have completed our move to Switzerland in Jan/Feb 2005.> Very interesting, as I was just about to get the 4.5. I will now wait for the Level 5, if it is that much better <
Can't say - it may be huge and it may be minor. There will be little or no circuit difference between the teflon version and the "4.5" that Bill or Warren can fit right now. I'd suggest you talk to them about doing the 4.5 now and getting a good deal on upgrading to the "5" when (or if) it becomes a viable option. If it doesn't really shine we won't release it - we are not into charging for fancy parts if they don't show a MAJOR improvement.
Since I just dropped my SCD-1 off to Warren for the level 4 VSE mod, it is a bit frustrating to see a new version in the works which is a total replacement in circuit boards and "bits".> I'd suggest that you talk to them about doing the "4.5" now and getting a good deal on upgrading to the "5" if (or when) it becomes a viable option <
Do you as the company head of VSE back up the > good deal < that you suggest that we ask Warren or Bill to give us as their customers regarding the > good deal < on the upgrade path from the 4.5 the 5 when (or if) it becomes a viable option? I don't mean to sound difficult here but I've personally got caught up on this kind of thing in the past from a Hi- End manufacturer only to find that this kind of "promise" was not honored and I as the customer was the looser in the end .
the teflon pcb "Level 5" (if & when it happens) at the price difference between their old upgrade level and what the new level is priced at.So you will not loose anything in having the current upgrade done now, and as we have no exact date when the Teflon "5" will be available (if ever) you will have full enjoyment of the current award winning performance in the meantime.

Thanks Allen. Thats good news regarding the upgrade. I look forward to hearing the VSE in my SCD-1
Thanks for clearing that up Allen. I will contact Bill Thalmann after the holiday's for the upgrade. I have a friend that has the Meitner DAC6/Meitner Transport, and even with the level 2 mod on my Sony SCD-1 he comments every time he comes over about the sound I am getting from the Sony.

Meitner's are thin on the ground in Europe...
I will do that Allen. I will let you know the results. We both have pretty reveling systems.
