....Sony have used that transport in many machines, including their cheapest DVD players. The laser pick up is not that bad and it has a tilt Servo. The spindle is a regular DC motor which, if you use the player to watch movies every day, it lasts about a year or two. Now, assembly which is incorporated in the 9000ES is KHM-240AAA P# A-6062-397-A This one is from the time when there were not many hybrid SACD, if any at all. The newer Sony SACD capable DVD players, have an improved assembly KHM-240AAA/J1RP the part # is: 8-820-144-06. This one you can obtain for about $50-70 (depending on the vendor) and, from what I know, it will not have the usual problems reading Hybrids.
But many knew that already, right?.....:)

Hello,Just want to give a small important note here.
The 9000ES use a KHM220AAA and not a KHM240AAA. KHM220AAA is a single lens/single laser diode model and that's the reason why the 9000ES is very few compatible with CD-R. On the opposite, the KHM240AAA is a single lens/dual laser diode (one for CD, one for DVD) and gives no trouble to read CD-R.
Unfortunately due to that single/dual laser diode arrangement those two laser pick up are not compatible ! Also the connectors pin-out are totally different.
that what i see in service manual - KHM-220AAA and not 240.
So there is no way to upgrade the 9000ES to read CD-Rs?
Note, mine seems to play DVD-Rs no problem (different animal I know).
They're only a little more expensive than their CD-R counterparts and my 9000ES has not met "W" it couldn't read (even the bargain basement Office Depot brand works). On the flip side, my Sony has yet to read a CDR successfully, so I stick with the RWs...Cheers,
Can that improved assembly be used as an exact replacement for the original one? And if so, will it need to be aligned once it is dropped in?Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us Alex,
...it is an exact replacement. Sometimes you'd need the alignment, sometimes not. It depends on how close the new laser pick up is to your old one. Of course, I would suggest and alignment in any case.
Hopefully the new assembly will also play CDR's more reliably as well.
...the DVP-NS500V ($299 DVD/SACD player) uses that new assembly and sure enough it does play CD-R.
I think it will be worth it to just replace it with the more reliable updated assembly. I have the PDF service manual and it is quite easy to replace, just requiring the removal of three screws and lifting up the optical pick-up. Then I will attempt to align it myself and if that fails, I can always send it to Sony for alignment, eliminating the extra service costs for the installment of the pick-up itself.Does that sound about right Alex?
