Some ten years ago (before the Asylum was started) there was a discussion in AR about the benefits of leaving your amps and other electronic items connected and switched on all the time, except during electronic storms or when going away etc.I agreed about the benefits, especially for power amps, but did say that as someone concerned about the environment I was worried about the waste of energy. At that time I came into quite a lot of flak from ppl who seemed to deny climate change and were not prepared to change their life style. I am interested to find out whether everone has now changed their minds or if some ppl still leave all their kit on nearly all the time?

I have four freezers at home (kitchen, sunroom, and basement fridges all have freezer compartments - plus a large chest freezer) not to mention all the cellphones, computers, TV sets, etc etc. I'm not going to worry about the McIntosh stuff on stand-by mode.
It sounds like your perspective to over consume and therefore not worry about the smaller examples of over consumption.

I watch my electricity useage carefully because my utility bills are noticeably higher if I don't! A few dollars a month may not seem like much, but why waste. A lot of gear consumes power even if switched off, so I also use switched power strips.May I also suggest making fewer, but better, purchases? Plan on keeping things longer, and buying better quality. That "cheap" item may not be so cheap if all costs are considered, including added pollution caused by manufacturing, landfill space when it dies prematurely, etc.
It just sucks when buzzwords become, well....buzzwords. I'm into the whole Responsible movement, even incorporating a Green cleaning system into my work, a 1 million square foot Multi-use skyscraper in Chicago.
Funny thing is when i start talking about turning lights off, turning copy machines off & the like, i am constantly met with defensive attitude's from employee's & co-workers. Recently our Electricity rates have climbed by 40% or more in Illinois so folks are beginning to come around to a 'new' way of seeing things. quite frustrating at times...My amps stay off, everything is off but the phono preamp & psu.
If anyone is interested in the craziest, most effective Green cleaning solution on the market...Google search H2Orange2 and take a look. The inventor's, EnviroxLLC, are the darling of Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley...who hopes to make Chi-town one of the Greenest urban areas on the Planet. H2Orange2 is used in City hall, all the public schools, and soon all the fire & police departments.
Its very similar to the Seventh Generation cleaning products avail in grocery stores, but much more powerful.
a family of 4 would spend about $30 per year on cleaning supplies with this PH Neutral cleaning system.
I never left my system on all the time. Two of my components have no power switch, so I use a switched power bar.The thing is that despite the overwhelming evidence there are still people who deny climate change. Did anyone here read the three recent reports on ipcc.ch? What more do you need? Storm surge in your garden, drinking water at critically low levels. The cry for help and blame the neighbours?
The bad thing about climate change is that it will affect us all. The good thing about climate change is that it will affect us all.
Guys, we are all in the same boat, climate change is not an issue that's restricted to third world countries. The US alone consumes 45% of the global car fuel. Prices in Europe rise when USA is on vacation.
I used a website to calculate the yearly emission my little family is causing by using electric energy, gas, car etc., daily life stuff: it's the equivalent to a return flight Berlin-Singapore. 24 hours in a Boeing produce the same emission as a whole year's daily life.
I had changed my mind a long time ago, when I was at university. The recent ipcc reports in fact provoked a further change: instead of using the lift, I now take the stairs (working on 11th floor). Instead of using the vacuum-cleaner, I use the broom. Switch off what is not needed. The list goes on.
The ipcc reports say that we have the technology and the funds to mitigate climate change but are we willing to do that? If we don't do anything, and I'm afraid that that is what is going to happen, we will have to spend 20% of the global GDP for the effects of climate change. And when the Greenland glacier melts, a sea level increase of 7 m is not what I wish our descendents to experience.
that ...there are still people who deny climate change. The open question is whether or not we are to blame. Who was making the SUVs when we exited the little ice age about a thousand years ago? Whan you consider the primary greenhouse gas, water vapor, then the argument "evaporates".
The US alone consumes 45% of the global car fuel.
Bogus statistic. A barrel of oil is a barrel of oil, regardless of what you do with it. The US consumes about 26%. Real data
rw
Oh really, so you didn't read the reports, did you?All those scientists who say that certainty that man is responsible is 90% are just dumb nuts who don't know what they are talking about?
Burning fossil fuels means releasing combustion products into the system which have been removed from the system a long time ago, hence disturbing natural equilibrated cycles. Carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere is much higher than the last 600.000 years. And it's all man made.
Nature doesn't care for one second about what we are doing. If
mankind disappears, so what? What are you telling your children when they ask about environment and cliomate change? The US is good for "only" 26% of global crude consumption, but you guys are only 4.5% of the global population!!!
In comparison, there are more people living in the European Union than in the US but they are consuming less.
Just stick your head in the sand and believe that problems will go away simply because you don't think of them. You too are sitting in the boat!
This is another dysfunctional UN group. Do you remember the Chapter 8 problem with the 1995 report? You know, the one where Benjamin Santer, the convening lead author, completely changed the conclusions and was duly blasted? We'd better take out some stuff!
When you have a political agenda, you certainly don't want these conclusions in the final draft:
- "None of the studies cited above has shown clear evidence that we can attribute the observed [climate] changes to the specific cause of increases in greenhouse gases."
- "No study to date has positively attributed all or part [of the climate change observed to date] to anthropogenic [man- made] causes."
- "Any claims of positive detection of significant climate change are likely to remain controversial until uncertainties in the total natural variability of the climate system are reduced."
Then you have those pesky assumptions:
The US is good for "only" 26% of global crude consumption, but you guys are only 4.5% of the global population!!!
I see you have quickly retreated from your fictitious "statistics".
What I find most amusing about this entire issue is that the biggest cheerleaders were saying as recently as 1971 that we were headed for the next ice age!
that is entirely in line with the US contribution to the world GDP.
as it is just too wasteful of a limited resource. I hope that my children won't be treading water due to GW but with the head in the sand attitude of many world leaders I don't hold out much hope.
Hi Satyr,Long time no see. Hope all is well with you.
Ten years ago, other than my CDP, I never left gear powered up when I wasn't
in the house. Now that my amp, pre and DAC are all tubed, the only thing left
powered up 24/7 is the ultra-low-torque motor on my NAS turntable.
æNormal is just a setting on my dryer.

Hi Stefan,
Good to see that you are still here. I would expect you to be sensitive of environmental issues, even when they conflict with some audiophile advantages. I was and am interested to see if attitudes generally have changed to-wards the green issues involved. I am aware that generally this forum has a more educated user base and so attitudes are less likely to be of the extreme variety.
Things are fine with me since I retired from teaching but I became involved with several committees eg running some local woodland and also with local politics for a time. I have also started growing our veggies again and might get some chickens again now I am home to protect them from the local foxes. No money now for esoteric systems but still enjoy music, including Adrian Legg (thanks for introducing me to his work).Do any of the old gang still log on eg Hyperion, Rodney G., Gnat or Jim Willis et al?
PS I will try to keep in touch with you - but you could have emailed me at any time. :)

Hey Satyr. How's life?I post here very infrequently. Occasionally at Audio Annex. John E posts over there as well, having been banned here.
Haven't heard from gnat in years. Maybe the KGB got him?
I've seen a few posts from Rodney.
FWIW, I power everything off after listening. It's not so much an energy thing as it is a thermal lifetime and equipment vulnerability thing. And my gear seems to get stable very quickly.
