Posted this message on the amp forum as well...Hello all, I'm new to this forum, though I recall being active about 5yrs ago when I originally purchased my system. I've got the Verity Parsifal Encores, Levinson 383 Integrated, Levinson 390S, Sony SACD (forgot the model), and a Roksan turntable (the acrylic one). As you can tell, I'm fading in terms of my focus on models etc. I am, however, getting a little bored with my amp and don't feel like I'm getting all that these fantastic speakers can give. I'm tempted to try something tube like, but don't want significant maintenance. Integrated would be ideal, but I know that separates is likely where I'm heading.
I want to keep it under US$17k or so.. Any recommendations for an integrated or separates? A nice AD recommended Audio Research LS26 pre, plus HD220 amp. I'm open to the idea, but part fo the alure of the 383 was that it looked good in the non-dedicated room. The Audio Research are not pretty... I'll give up a little quality in order to get something that looks good.
Follow Ups:
Change your sources instead.I've listened to the player with the ARC stuff. It will not cure the boredom till something more *alive* driving the rest.
As for Roksan TT, what are the phonostage and cartridge you are using?
I wanted to try a tube amp, just for fun and thought I'd pick up a Pathos Classic One (not too expensive, just for fun) to add to the mix and not replace the Levinson. Maybe it's just the dealers talk, but everyone said it won't drive those speakers. The CD is the Levinson 390S - I haven't auditioned in 5yrs, but when I did, it was amongst the best of many I looked at. I really think it's great. I listen to records less frequently, but recently had a local turntable expert re-wire my Roksan Radius 5, and we changed the cartridge to a Blue Point Special Evo III. I don't have enough vinyl to change the turntable as yet so want to focus on the CD/Amp part. Given changes in formats over the years and having been drawn into SACD (and not feeling satisfied about it), I thought the amp would be the appropriate place to start (especially since I wanted to get some tubes).
More succinctly, I want to try out tubes, but don't want anything unnaturally warm or billowy on the bass.
The ARC is good as many.
Certainly they or other push pull valve amps can drive your speakers and probably give a bit of life to your sleepy 390S. ;)
You might want to try a Nagra 845 PP monos and preferably with their matching PLL or PLP ( this one has no remote but has excellent phonostage and headamp )I found your speakers like a fair amount of power to control slowish bass drivers.
If your room is small, you can also consider a higher-powered SET amp. ( no 300B, 2A3, 45s ) Speaker matching is harder on those so you need to try them to see if they work.
Personally, I like the Parcifal with a solid state amp.
Have you considered Nagra or Accuphase?
