I've slowly the past few months, with the help for people here, begun building my first good (by audiophile standards) stereo.I got a Marantz 2015 which I absolutely love and could tell right away why it was so highly recommended and what a difference it really made in my sound quality. Literally I could tell "immediately". My old stereo was a Panasonic compact system. After I got the Marantz I continued using my same speakers that came with my compact Panasonic and frankly was always impressed with (when I compared them to anything else I heard). In added on a $100 Sony subwoofer awhile back to fill in all the lows.
Yesterday I finally bought new speakers. I've been reading about how my stereo wouldn't be complete without *good* speakers and how perhaps, if not definitely, they are the most important part of the stereo. I bought a pair of used, but good, Klipsch KG4s and was so excited to try them out. But after hooking them up they don't seem to have nearly the same sound as my cheap Panasonics with the Sony sub. I fully realize this may be since I'm not used to them, that I obviously must be wrong and will soon realize this. But am I? Seriously. When I compared them at first the Panasonics sounded more tinny but full (from the sub). But the Klipsch don't have a good bottom or top, at least to me right now. They almost sound muffled but that's pushing it, they don't sound that, I'm just concerned if my Panasonics might have been good.
Follow Ups:
For sure like everyone says below make sure everything is connected properly and the speakers are positioned reasonably. You might want to insure your cables, stands and equipment rack are of reasonable quality as well. There really is no such thing as "good", except in a subjective sense, no matter what every system owner, reviewer and dealer is going to tell you.
I admit it the KG4 (or any other speaker) is a great speaker but when I heard them they were very unimpressive. Should I buy them and buy a bunch of other stuff so they can sound good in my system? Or should I take them back and try something else that I actually like better than the Panasonics?
Me? I take em back and try as many different speakers as possible until you find one that gives the same kind of obvious improvements you got when you upgraded the amp.
As you spend time making this upgrade you may discover that it's actually colorations or distortions made by your speakers that appeal to you OR you may find the speakers are really better than you think. Either way when you eventually do buy the upgraded speakers you will know for sure they sound lots better than the Panasonics.
The KG4's are nice, I had a pair in college and they really rocked out baby! Very efficient, you don't need a massive amp, but of course we had a big amp (Denon) that did the job. There is a passive radiator on the back so be sure and pull the speaker out from the wall a few feet. I cannot imagine that the Panasonic's sound better but who knows, with the sub maybe you are used to a different sound. Have you tried aiming the tweeters at different angles? I would try to check all the drivers and xover by playing different tones/music to veryify everything is working ok, then play with positioning. Good luck.
Just kidding.> > > maybe you are used to a different sound...
Agreed. I think you are correct. If he went from the Klipsch to the Pannys he'd think the Panny's were crap. He's accustomed to something about the cheaper speakers that the Klipsch's are not giving him.
There's no way to know that the Panasonics actually outperform the Klipsch in some aspect of presentation and that's what the owner prefers.Ok the Klipsch might be better in 95% of performance criteria - but it might be the other 5% is what the owner prefers.
If the system is working, setup properly and consists of decent components the new speakers should sound lots better and obviously so.
Give me rhythm or give me death!
I wonder if the Panasonic speakers are using full range or wide range drivers without crossovers. Many prefer the sound of these drivers to multi way systems with crossovers – regardless of price.I do.
There are varying degrees of quality of full/wide range drivers. Check the link below.

If they are bi-wireable, make sure the jumper is there for the tweeter. also at a very low volume, put your ear to the tweeter to make sure it is playing on both speakers. The Phase advise is definately the best.
Mike "use your ears" Z
Dave's suggestion about phase is very important. I always connect speaker wires so that the marked wire (ribbed on zip, writing on some others, siver if copper/silver) is connected to the black or ground speaker terminal and the ground of the amplifier.A listening test is needed to confirm proper phasing also. After everything is hooked up, tune in a radio station and set the stereo selector to mono so the same signal is sent to both speakers. Listen to them fairly close but centered between them (nearfield) and there should be a strong center image of the sound. Reverse one end of one speaker wire connection to reverse the phase, and this strong center image should become diffuse and weak. Revers this connection to put things right and you are done.
The Klipsch Kg4 are very well respected speakers, and are efficient enough that a modestly powered receiver like your Marantz should be able to drive them well. However there are mysteries involved in the elusive concept of synergy, and perhaps there is some reason these do not go together well. If I recall, the Klipsch speakers were new in the mid 1980s, and the Marantz was 5 -10 years old at the time.
Perhaps the subwoofer comparison is unfair. Have you tried the subwoofer with the Klipsch speakers?

However, a Panel were set up to investigate the issue, who found him (Engr. James Akmed) guilty and the present Democratic President of Nigeria Chief Olusegun Obasanjo suspended him from transacting any business in Nigeria with immediate effect and was asked to leave the country. However, these made the contract fund "UNCLAIMABLE" which was only known to my colleagues and I. If your new speakers sound a bit muffled, they may simply be wired out of phase. Check the connections to your amplifier and make sure they're in phase. Second, make sure both tweeters are working. A dead tweeter will give any speaker a muffled sound. If the Klipsches are wired in phase, with tweeters intact, it may simply be that you like the sound of the Panasonics better. Panasonic has produced some surprisingly good speakers for their price, and maybe you got lucky!
