Managed to stop by the HE 2007 show today in New York City. Some observations:1. Planar/electrostatic speakers were mysteriously absent from the entire show
2. Same thing goes for horn speakers
3. There are some promising lower-priced speakers that sound great! (DCM, Audioengine, to name a few)
4. Musical variety was abysmal. Now, I understand why companies wouldn't want to play poorly recorded music, but I personally don't see much enjoyment in listening to "X" singer singing in "Y" language recorded in "Z" country. It was difficult to find any room with real toe-tapping music that had some cajones.
5. My personal favorite room was the Weiss room. Some of the other rooms may have been more spectacular, with more fireworks and hoopla, but I think that this would be the rig I would bring home and keep me in musical enjoyment for the longest period of time.

I find that classical music, especially of solo instruments like the piano and cello, can ofte make a speaker that sounds just fine, even spectacular on popular music reveal its limitations. At the last HE show I attended, virtually all rooms playing classical music sounded less than superb, though a few sounded pretty good. One could say it's the size of the rooms or it's the lack of time to really tune the room, but my experience in stores and homes is the same. Most of the people attending are not classical music fans, so there's no strong incentive to play it.Joe
Great assortment of pics. Note though that the Gershman speakers were being driven by Simaudio Moon amplification, not Classé as you captioned. I can see that mistake being made though, as there is a resemblance between the current offerings by both manufacturers. Nice job.
thanks for the correction! :D
I can think of 4 off the top of my head - Jeff Catalano of High Water Sound was showing the Aspara Acoustics HL1 (above), Rethm had their new Saadhana, a new one for me the Loiminchay Mandarin Supremes and the Haniwa Audio horn speakers (http://www.haniwaaudio.com/).I was looking forward to the Damoka room and maybe some Klangfilms or Vitavox but not this year.
I was impressed by how clear these Sound Labs sounded, but was a little disturbed that they were frequently played with rear channel speakers for much of the time I listened. Why not just 2 channel planar reproduction and leave it at that?
I was informed by email that: "The speakers in the Weiss room are the SurrounTec Ipon (http://www.surrountec.de/public/en/prod_mon_ipon.php?). The SurrounTec
speakers are professional monitors." They were represented by Weiss as their own.
Personally they are the best CD source that I have heard so far, but the price... ouch! ;pGreat that they have added amplifiers to the family!
Now I have more choices of complete Swiss electronics:
Nagra, Orpheus Laboratories, Goldmund, FM Acoustics, Mimetism(Swiss/French) and now Weiss!
to play CD's. So far it's been a very egalitarian musical experience. One could complain about audiophile music, but it's the same as complaining about middle of the road taste.I've had great results (classical).

"4. Musical variety was abysmal."Normal for an audio show.....
"Now, I understand why companies wouldn't want to play poorly recorded music, but I personally don't see much enjoyment in listening to 'X' singer singing in 'Y' language recorded in 'Z' country."
If the music's good, I don't care what country it's from or what language it's sung in....
"It was difficult to find any room with real toe-tapping music that had some cajones."
You mean those box-shaped percussion instruments?? [-;
Seriously, I think it's more the lack of decent digital playback than the music. For the former is often mistaken for the latter.
I cited this problem at the 2006 show. It got depressing.
"5. My personal favorite room was the Weiss room."
Supposedly some of the finest digital front ends currently available.... But the expense will often require a second mortgage. The main hope is to snag one used.... But you may have to wait a while before such opportunity.
I did like Weiss room as well, despite the lack of room treatment.I did enjoy the Vandersteen model 5 with the AR electronics’.
The Aurum Acoustics was also one of my favourite with their great WAF
acoustic panel. The Guru speaker. The Scandinavian response to the Brit’s mini monitor.
Odyno
not be confused with cojines, the comfy pillow. Now, you could put the cojines on the cajones, and sit down your cojones.
Killer Jamones
They left out the best part.... chicharrones!
sí, you said a bad word, plus you are making me hungry for Cuban food—cabrone, I can't satisfy this desire easily in North Dakota.
yOUR THOUGHTS?
Was there yesterday, went to the KEF room twice. Very nice sound, fed by excellent electronics (If I remember right it was Chord).
I wasn't in the Weiss room or MBL room. (Was David Weinhart there?)I wasn't in the Ayre or Bel Canto room.
I wasn't even at the HE 2007 show.....
