After procrastinating for over a year, I finally motorvated meself
to hook-up my beloved JMR Twins ll to my "wife's" kitchen stereo, a
vintage Pioneer SX-750 receiver with a Rotel RCD 965BX CDP. She
was happy with the small Boston HD5 speakers in there and they
were...adequate and appropriate. The Twins are somewhat overkill in there and,
well, I guess they, you know...they just, well, they just deserve
better (he snobbishly types).Anyway, the Twins been gatherin' dust as they were replaced with
Trente many moons ago but I'll never sell them, so, why not?
Needed new speaker cable too, so went to RS and bought a 25'
extension cord to use, as there is no Home Depot round hear and
I've been interested in trying an extension cord in that capacity.
So, clean the kitchen and rearrange a few things to accomodate the
larger speakers, which certainly ARE NOT ideally placed.
Yikes!...one is on the refrigerator! What kinda audiophile does
THAT (he less snobbishly types)?!?!?Cut the cord, prep the ends, run the pretty shiny bare end copper
to the Twins (JMR speakers LOVE bare copper!) then to the Pioneer
(which is temporarily turned sideways for set-up). Check
everything. Cool. Power on. Nada. Hmmmmm. Maybe that particular
extension cord don't cut it? Check everything. Again. Power on.
Nada part dos. Hear a slight bit of the source when the volume is
at 90%. Hmmmm. Doesn't bode well. But! Gotta go meet my wife and friends for dinner, then the school spring
play with my wife's class. What kinda sushi was that?... (Why? won't
the kitchen stereo work?)... Inhale... (why? won't the kitchen
stereo work?)... exhale... (why? won't the kitchen stereo work?)...
What song were those kids singing?... (Why? won't the kitchen
stereo work?)... What were you saying?... (Why? won't the kitchen
stereo work?)... Good to see you and Why? won't the kitchen stereo
work?Get home, start over. Remove the 3rd (ground) wire from the mix.
White wire +, green wire -, no black wire. Sure, that's GOT TO BE
IT! Do it. Nada part tres. Now have the receiver staring me in the
face as I sit and ponder WHAT the HELL is WRONG? Hmmmm. Then, I SAW THE LIGHT!!
Actually, the red monitor light had been on all along, just hadn't previously seen it.
Flick switch to source. No light. Music! Problem solved.Damn. Definately would have enjoyed dinner more if I'd figured that out earlier.
Not sure about the Spring Play though...

Follow Ups:
I thought I was the only one that had these momentary lapses of reason.Right channel not working - DAMNIT - 30 minutes later I realize the PC is unplugged on the right amp!!
Guy called me up was very angry called me many names sent me nasty emails said he was going to call his lawyer. As I tried to get a word in to this rather unpleasent gent. I asked a few trouble shooting questions he kept insulting me was about ready to tell him off when as I walked him through set up power on found out he did everything right tube install etc but didnt turn power switch on amp. After he did so amp fired up worked great, he hardly admited this error told me I should be more careful.....Had another gent said he wanted full refund plus shipping costs both ways item was over 100lbs of amplifier gent said 1 side was out I tried to walk him through hook up power on after a bit of this switching cables etc I knew problem wasent amp both sides worked after rca was switched to other preamp output. He insisted problem was amp related even though it worked, turned out his cd player rca wasent pluged in he was embaressed and said he was sorry for the trouble and nasty emails....
Well, with this experience I never once thought of blaming anything/one. For a bit I thought the new cable may have been the culprit, but fundamently I new it was something I hadn't done properly, and when the obsession with it kicked in and I was briefly blinded to the obvious.Another 15 minutes or so, though and I'm sure I would have started blaming the cats, the postion of the sun, or even my gene pool. Well, the later is still somewhat a favorite default for blame.
I suppose when you're a manufacturer, the patient hand-holding of the irrational becomes an important trait.

who had trouble telling two horses apart. They were both the same height, the same weight, hooves the same color, it was a real puzzler. He measured them every which way looking for a difference. Finally he came upon the answer!
The black horses' tail was 1/2" longer than the white horses'!

I recently spent a feverish half hour trying to work out what was wrong with one channel through the system. Absolute silence should have given me a clue, but I just had to check through the whole thing, one component at a time, did a cat decide to claim territorial rights by marking the valves? Did I kick a speaker cable loose pursuing a well oiled woman towards the bedroom? (no such luck). Had something gone wrong with the new(ish) Quicksilver Mini Mite monoblocks?
No.
As I finally spotted, I had managed to actually forget to turn one of them on...
What was particularly frustrating about the "kitchen stereo" experience was the blatant obviousness of it all, such as in your experience. Never will I question the first trouble shooting suggestion in most owner's manuals: is the unit plugged in?On my "main" system I had a "dead" channel once, and it turned out I had TWO pair of ICs (both different brands/ages) go out AT THE SAME TIME. What are the odds of that? Mechanical, as opposed to electrical failure yet. Really thought that one would drive me nuts.
Well, ok; more nuts.

I once tried to use an adapter to connect a three-prong plug to a two-prong outlet (using the center screw for safety ground).... And wondered why the adapter didn't fit properly.... The ground lug barely reached the center screw....
