One that goes to show that $$$ does not mean good sound. IT had such great synergy and musicality, I was truly impressed, so much so we just kept spinning some vinyl WAY too late into the night.I am not going to remember every component but here goes:
Plinius Integrated amp.. from the late 90's
Music Hall MMF7 with a Hiroshi cartridge that was picked up 2nd hand VERY cheap.
Sonus Farber Electa Armatours (I know I hacked that spelling.)
Older MIT 750 speaker wire.
The room was nothing special, he had his components what seemed to be a decent rack, and he had the speakers about 6' apart and you sat about 8' from them.
That being said, The sound was wonderful, musical, and very involving. It had just about everything within reason (prat, air, detail, warmth, imaging ect...)and sure it had it weaknesses, but who the hell cares?! IT sounded like music.
I have heard much more expensive that could not match the overall presentation of this one.
I just though I would share because it amazes me everyday how much more important synergy is than price.
Follow Ups:
Enjoyment was at the heart of your focus and the system, simply a tool/means to enjoy it with.Nice to see there's still music lovers out there putting in the time to properly assemble a satisfying system, both through auditioning various products and trial and error. Sounds like you're on the right path with your own system with long-term satisfaction in mind, knock on wood!
As there are many other fine products out there it still pleases me to see the Plinius name in the systems context, I also concur to this lines high pedigree, flexibility and above all exceptional musicality as a very happy Plinius owner.
Thanks again Michael Z, for taking the time out from your day to share both your personnel impressions from your listening session as well as your observations in regards to price to performance values and the importance of system synergy.
BEST...
for sure
Just as a fun question:As an audiophile, if that system and room were yours, how long would you remain satisfied before the compulsion to fiddle/change/upgrade took over?
Honestly, and I mean this...My system is built with synergy in mind and I am damn close to getting it the way I want. When that happens (and I think it will be with tweaks and twix, not upgrading) I am done... I am so fearful to change anything as it stands that it took me 3 months to decide between 2 tables!!! (my last component I needed).
Besides, I have WAY too many LPs to buy... Good question though!

This is why you shouldn't chase the latest 'Best Buy' component or put together components with five star rave reviews and expect a five star system.System building is about concealing the deficiencies and accentuating the strengths of the individual components to the taste of the listener, and sometimes a universally accepted 'better' component isn't better in an individual system.
Amen!! Couldn't have said it better!
... about synergy gets to the heart of the matter; so often overlooked or misunderstood.
