After owning speakers from many generations of designers and of differing designs, I have come to the conclusion that to expect anything like perfection from any of them is a lesson in frustration.
I now own three pair of speakers and enjoy the hell out of swapping them out, regularly, and rejoicing in their different qualities.
None is "better."
I hear vocals better with one pair, low bass is more accurate with another, and highs are silkier with the third.
No, I'm not a dealer nor do I dedicate an enormous amount of funds to this hobby: all speakers are vintage.
All of us are, of course, different but I think this path may prove fruitful for others.
Need I mention that the major differences between them far outweigh the differences from swapping out any electronic component?
Follow Ups:
I wouldnt do that, even if I had won the lottery, I like to sit on my favourite chair, in my pleasant to be in living-room, and listen/watch whatever I fancy at the moment, from a football match to Mahler, Chakira, John Lee Hooker, whatever...My dipole single driver speakers, helped by super-tweeters and subwoofer, play all this equally well, without frustration...

Cut wood for driver size...Enjoy the music. Oh man I can't wait to slop my Goodmans up! Go on ebay and buy a pair of Radio Shack 1197 drivers for pretty cheap. Get a 4x8 sheet of ply, cut in half, mount speakers prop against a wall and be prepared to hear percussive brush work on jazz like you have never heard before. The big flaw with the rat shack drivers is that nasty honk. It can be tamed with the fiber glass wrapped around the whizzer tweak and some rope caulk around the basket of the driver. It ain't perfect but I will be scrwed and tatooed if I have heard a pair of speakers under 100$ that can be dynamic, fast and offer out of the box vocal performance.
How much have you spent on speakers and speaker exploits in the last 18 months? Just give it to me in number of digits, high or low.
buy vintage speakers on eBay that will astound you.
Old Design Acoustic, EPI, AR, and, I think the best bargain of them all, KLH. These companies all produced fine speakers that reproduced much of the frequency range and are "natural" sounding, though each has its own signature.
Gotta go with you there, Scott!I have been listening to my Adire Audio Dipole kit- the DDR, for a few months now and keep dropping my jaw on the floor!
Too bad adire removed the kit from their 'site- at least I copied the PDF for future use/reference.
Dipole rules, IMHO, even with all the deficiencies inherit to them. The music has been sweet so far!

as well as speakers, it goes for formats-vinyl vs cd vs sacd, etc. its truly the music we are after and there are many different ways to arrive at the destination.my $15 fisher rack system type tuner sometimes AMAZES me. speaker changes are only part of the picture (and i have a few).
...regards...tr
i wish i could do this with my wife, but you are spot on...the differences are fun.
single driver speakers or stats, have you? ;~)
14 years and I now have Tannoy 10" Reds (Cadets).
Been there, have done it and I'd still have the M-Ls if they were smaller and easier to move.
Never a problem with 'em and sold 'em for about half of what I paid new: now THAT'S value!
