AIX Records is still actively recording and releasing DVD-Audio titles...about 10 last year and headed for another 10-15 this year. The latest is Hanna-McEuen, a country duo, and the recent Ernest Ranglin. Both are currently available at the web site.We also recorded Wallace Roney, John Gorka, Albert Lee and Raul Pineda in December...an intense but great couple of days of sessions. Yesterday, I got the opportunity to play the 5.1 96/24 mix for Raul and he flipped out. After having just completed a CD of much of the same material he was astounded at how much better the 5.1 DVD-Audio sounded.
Sorry I haven't been around too much lately...nice to know the arguments continue. As far as the debate on DualDiscs...anyone that wants to have a plain DVD-Audio in addition to the DualDiscs that we release...I'll make you a custom one off. Although, I've never had any reports of problems with them.
AIX Records DVD-As are fantastic. I cannot recommend them highly enough! You will be stunned. I had about 12 DVD-As and all sounded pretty awful to me. Then I bought Beatles "Love" and it sounded better. Then I tried some AIX and they are just beyond belief. See my praise of them on www.avsforum.com. Click on "Audio Area" then on "Surround Sound Formats". You'll see the thread I started titled "AIX Records DVD-As are Fantanstic". Dr. Mark Waldrep puts the 96 kHz/24 bit hi-res sound on one side and video on the other, with slightly less fidelity (I cannot hear a difference). The video, now shot with hi-def cameras on later DVD-As, adds a LOT, in my opinion. Only one of the classicals has video, but all the non-classicals do. see www.aixrecords.com. You can order at 1-800-668-4249. They are in Los Angeles. They get them right out. I bought two, then ordered 5 more late on last Friday. They shipped on Monday and I had them in Fresno, Ca on Wednesday. You are in for a REAL treat with these. BTW, since the flip side has the video and the audio in very slightly lower res 5.1 audio, you don't need a DVD-Audio player to enjoy them. If you have a DVD player hooked to a good quality sound system, you'll love these. Try them and then, please, spread the word!
I quote ... "After having just completed a CD of much of the same material he was astounded at how much better the 5.1 DVD-Audio sounded."OK, I am curious ... why continue to offer DualDiscs? I stopped buying them even before they died because I was concerned about my hardware.
Given the fact that most people don't listen to the CD side anyway ... what is the point? Why not just offer standard DVD-Audio disks? I would buy them if that was the case. It sounds like you have some great stuff.
Most of the discs that we offer have a DVD-Audio side and DVD-Video side. The Collectors Edition titles have a DualDisc with the DVD-Audio and a CD version of the audio. I do this because of the publishing costs. It would cost twice as much to put two pieces of plastic in the same package. I've have no reports of trouble with the DualDiscs...but I wouldn't recommend them for a slot drive unit.If someone really wants the DVD-Audio material for their car, just let me know and I will burn them a version on DVD-R.
In the very near future, iTrax.com will offer our catalog and other HD AUdio content for download. Stay tuned.
I'll be on the lookout for the ones that interest me.
Brand new album entitled: "Fear of a Blank Planet".
ETA April '07http://www.porcupinetree.com/news.cfm
says:-"The album is set for April release through Roadrunner in Europe, Atlantic in the US, and WHD Entertainment in Japan. It's likely that both the stereo CD and 5.1 surround sound disc will be packaged together as standard."
To be closely followed by DVD-A of "Lightbulb Sun".
It's been a long time since the last DVD-A release from a major record company. I was beginning to wonder....
My last major purchase was Doors "Perception" box set (CDs + DVDAs). I do recommend it. I was never a Doors 'fan' but this is excellent work from Rhino. Apparently there are still some around for grabs.
Here's a new Neil Young DVD-A that came out today.I haven't heard this release yet but I am familiar with the performance and it is a classic.
According to the Elusive Disc website, it is Young's standard DVD-V with 2ch 24/96 LPCM.
To me, a "standard DVD-V with 2ch 24/96 LPCM" is a stereo DVD-Audio disc, but I understand that different people have different definitions of what constitutes DVD-Audio. (I believe the Massey Hall disc itself has a DVD-Audio logo on it, if that means anything.) However, if you are asking if the disc contains a hi-rez multi-channel layer, my understanding is that the answer is no.

A DVD-V disc is not a DVD-A disc. A stereo DVD-A disc requires a DVD-A player. A stereo DVD-V disc can be played on any DVD-V player. There have been stereo only DVD-A discs from cos. like Hi-Res Music. I have one. According to this the last DVD-A disc was November: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-audio
My understanding is that the primary specifications for true DVD-Audio are not only 24 bit word length and 48/96/192Khz sampling rates but that all "true" DVD-Audio's use Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP)or PPCM versus the lossy compression scheme utilized on DVD-Video discs (with and audio stream)LPCM.
LPCM is uncompressed PCM. You can't have "loss" if you don't compress it.
I am wrong in what I said about LPCM being lossy. I stand corrected and unfortunately it is not the first time or the last time in my life I will be wrong.

I dunno!!! The only place I could get them in my local area was Future Shop, and they seem to be dropping them line a 15 stone first-footer's libation!!!Seriously, though, I haven't seen or heard anything new other than the potential of Genesis releasing SACD/DVD-A hybrids (at least thats what I understand!)...

> > other than the potential of Genesis releasing SACD/DVD-A hybrids < <It's not "potential" - Genesis SACDs are on their way. They are not SACD/DVD-A. They are hybrid SACDs with a companion DVD-V disc. No DVD-A content.
