My player is an APL Denon 3910, and this may be part of the problem. The Denon's default option Multi-channel. But I must say that when the DVD-A plays in stereo mode (e.g. Linda Ronstadt, Diana Krall) it sounds WONDERFUL.
Follow Ups:
I wish that certain DVD-As also had a scrolling slide show. The the Jesus and Mary Chain DVD-A sounds dramatically better on the DVD side of the dual disc; as opposed to the redbook/CD side. But, - you can only look at the menu on the monitor, or call up the lyrics and look at them. Why not have a slide show, pics of the band? I guess that one can shut off the monitor. The Dual disc is not that bad of a value, - I paid $15. That's not too unreasonable a price for a nice DVD-A remaster of the original; that is if you happen to dig TJAMC.
PS> Had a great time at APL just last night listening to Alex's SOTA NWO-2.5!! To listen to one is to buy one....

IIRC, you can reprogram the defaults to stereo, if you so choose.
Kal, I'm not sure that reprogramming the Denon 3910 to Stereo is possible, but I'd like to hear more. My impression is that the Denon defaults to MC automatically on each new disc, and that the logic is locked into the chip. Like I say, I hope you are right and would like to hear more.
Go to the Audio Setup MenuSelect Audio Channel
Select 2Channel(SRSOFF)
Exit
Here is the link to the manual you want page 38

Well, the 3910 and the manual are up at my country place and I will not be back there for the rest of this month. If I get a chance, I'll download a copy of the manual but you might check one out before then.
But, - you and Vettracer are correct, - the Denon should be set to SRS-Off via the Setup, Audio Setup, options.....
