My Panasonic CP-72s is connected to an Onkyo TX-SR304S. I have played at least a hundred different DVDs with this setup, never a problem getting surround (DD). Now I'm buying DVD-A discs (late adopter) and NONE of them are coming out in surround. They play in 2ch hi def mode 96K/24 bit or something like that if its available on the disc, but never surround. Is there something in the setup a DVD player to get it to output surround when there's a DVD-A? Never had to with regular DVDs...
Follow Ups:
The CP72 was one of those models that would get the dreaded OC7 error (or whatever the code was). Then the player will be totally dead and unfixable. Panasonic would only warranty replace them with inferior spec'ed units without the Faroudja processing because the following model line didn't have it.
I haven't had problems with mine and I really like the film like quality of what I play on it. If it does die, I'd give a shot replacing the drive motor which appears to be the failure part.
That may be more than it's worth. I do agree that the picture was nice on it.
Finally got around to it, all 6 analog connections made and played Marvin Gaye's Collection, a legit DVD-A, everything seems fine now. I'd like to get ahold of additional DVD-A titles, seems most of what I ordered was Dolby Digital, not DVD-A, though it all pretty much sounds the same to me.
...all of Panasonic's consumer DVD players and recorders with DVD-A support will only play the 2-channel stereo tracks on most DVD-A discs. And on those DVD-A discs with only multichannel content, the multiple channels will be downmixed to 2-channel stereo. Moreover, any copy-protected DVD-A (this includes all major-label DVD-A discs) played through a digital output (coaxial or optical) will be downsampled to 48kHz sampling rate regardless of the program's originally encoded sampling rate.
As for Kal's response, all of the Panasonic consumer DVD players have only 2-channel stereo analog outputs. You will have to use a digital connection in order to use multichannel sound on those units.

I assumed (incorrectly) that it is similar to Panasonic's lower-end models, such as their current lower-end DVD recorders. But the DVD-CP72 is a middle-of-the-line unit with a full six analog audio outputs. The owners manual for the DVD-CP72 does not tell you which audio mode is supported for DVD-A.
I'll check it out this weekend. I hope you are wrong about the lock, I just picked up about 10 DVD-A discs. I wonder if the latest firmware corrects that, I know that mine is not the last one issued, but have been holding off on installing it, don't want to mess up what I have now, a pretty good player.
I have deleted the info about the lock. However, the lock applies when you use the digital outputs for audio, in your particular case.
For S/PDIF and TOSLINK, I think there may be a bandwidth issue preventing transmission of hi-res multichannel in addition to the encryption issue. I think the current options are i-Link (IEEE 1394), Denon Link, and HDMI. Although I suspect only HDMI will be supported in the future.
You need 6 analog cables for DVD-A.
Looks like you are right. The CP-72s manual has the 5.1 surround analog, six jacks, as the DVD-A out. I'll go ahead and run the cables for it, see if it works. The receiver has the inputs for it. Some of the DVD-A discs I have also allege to have Dolby Digital tracks and I can't get those to play on all of them, some do, some don't. The 96/24bit 2 channel track does work and sounds good.My newer DMR-ES15 dvd recorder advertises to have DVD-A, but only has 2 channel output for it. I haven't been following this, it is my first foray into DVD-A, has Panasonic abandoned the format? Sure looks like it.
I have the Panny S97 DVD and DVD-A player. I bought it in fall, 2005 for $270. Now (March, 2007) I see it at a major NYC on-line retailer for $229.99. I comes with an HDMI cable, so I know you can get 5.1 sound out with that. (I'm using two analog cables to my stereo receiver). Since this unit is still on the market, Panasonic has not abandoned DVD-A, or had not when these shipped.
> > "My newer DMR-ES15 dvd recorder advertises to have DVD-A, but only has 2 channel output for it. I haven't been following this, it is my first foray into DVD-A, has Panasonic abandoned the format? Sure looks like it."I have that unit, also. It is 2-channel stereo only in DVD-A mode.
Are you telling me that you can't get DVD-A thru an optical connection?
Never could, maybe never will. HDMI is the best bet for hi rez audio output for the future.
> > "Never could, maybe never will."Actually, you can get sound from a DVD-A disc through the optical or coaxial digital audio out - but that signal will be degraded to 48K/24b or 48K/16b if the content is from a copy-protected disc, and the display will not even tell you at all whatsoever that the audio is being degraded when played back through the digital audio out (it will tell you only the originally encoded sampling rate and quantization rate).
