I must admit, even after years of listening to the quad mix, I've never realised how subtle it really is. I must truly say, I have never experienced this level of fidelity before on this mix.For the first time, I can actually make out bits and pieces of what the female announcer on the PA in "On the run" is saying (something about the 2.5 to Rome, and a warning to passengers disembarking on the platform). On "Time" I can clearly hear the individual "tic tocs" of the various clocks (they all sound slightly different) instead of them all blending in the background. I can also clearly hear the slight wow and flutter on the tape in The Great Gig in the Sky (the piano tone sounds slightly warbly). And in Us and Them, the surround panning for the "round and round" echoes are slightly different from the normal echoes (the words "round and round" seem to go around the speakers rather than anchored in each speaker like the other echoes).
There are so many other little details that I've never noticed before. It is truly a wonderful experience. My thanks to the anonymous people who made this disc possible!
Follow Ups:
How about when Parry's sax kicks in for the first time?2/3'ds of the way into The Great Gig in the Sky, Clare Torry say's something. You can barely make it out if at all on the original Parson 2 channel mix and the Guthrie mix for SACD it's questionably located in the left rear speaker. For the quad mix, Guthrie brought out the vocal and put it center stage and brought it out so you can hear what she's saying, finally.
Over all, there are things I like about the SACD mix and things I like about this one better. I think that if Parsons had more time with this one...it would blow the sacd mix out of the water.
Thank you very much, Mr. Supo for bringing this to us. Now...could you find the original quad mixes for Wish You Were Here? :D
This was always muddy and undecipherable on the original 2ch mix, but i could always make out what she's saying on the Quad LP.However, having said that, there's no question that it's crystal clear on this disc, it's almost as if she was in the room uttering those words rather than "mumble mumble mumble ..." :-)
No doubt about it. This version rocks the house.
Not sure if this is kosher to discuss here but can anybody advise me as to where I could get a copy of this?
Thanks in advance!
Jon
