I am about to purchase a Denon DVD-2200 for $40 from a local thrift store. The only thing that is wrong is that it is missing the remote. I want to use it for CD playback (and DVD-A and SACD) on my 2 channel system. I am currently using an older Denon DCM-340 for playback (which has a nice warm sound). I will do a side by side comparison, but was wondering if the dedicated player will sound better, or if the DVD-2200 will outperform it.
Follow Ups:
The DCM-340 is okay for a multi-disc player, but the 2200 has a lot more going for it with redbook playback (not to mention HiRez).
Worth using quality audio cables with this player.
Nice find BTW. $40 is great value.
A 2200 for $40 is a steal. IMHO it is a very decent all-around
player. I have owned one for several years now and it now resides
in my HT system. I am not familiar with your CD player so I
will not comment on how the 2200 will stack up against it.
But I will say that the 2200 can compete with CDs players in
the ~$500 range. I used mine for SACD/DVD-A in my 2 channel
system for a couple of years. I compared it to my MF A3
dedicated CD player and the A3 won out. The A3 has a much more
smoother analog type of sound than the 2200. But, the A3 was
~$900 new in it's day. I would assume that the 2200 will probably
sound pretty close to the CD player you have now. You should be
able to score a remote on Ebay if you get the 2200. The only
really irritable thing about it is the disk reading speed. It can
be slow reading the disk when you 1st put one in.Good luck...
Well, I just went down and purchased the DVD-2200, and no, I am not crazy. The unit performs very, very well with SACD's, DVD-A's, CD's, and even burned CD/R's. I noticed that the weight and build of the unit is MUCH better than my older Denon CD player.Listening to the unit I noticed deeper and more naturally convincing bass, a much wider and stronger soundstage (with a strong center and a stage that extends beyond the speakers) with only slight harshness in the mids and highs. When I dimmed the display, some of the harshness went away, and when I applied cheap rubber "sticky feet" that I bought from Walmart, the harshness went away even more.
I noticed that when I touched the top of the Denon 2200 during playback, there was clearly some vibrations making their way to the unit. Will a layer of Dynamat inside the case clean up the slight harshness that I am still hearing? I know that I am being very critical of the unit, because the harshness is very slight, but I just would like to know if it will help.
All in all, an excellent purchase! I talked the store clerk down to $35 - so the whole thing was about $37 out the door!
My 2200 suffers from the vibration issue as well. I first
experimented with a small bag of sand setting directly
on top of the player right about the drive unit. This seemed
to dampen the vibrations. I later purchased one of Gutwire Notepads
which does just as good and looks better. I have read where some
people have used some of the Blue Ice soft packets that
you freeze and put in your cooler. The thick fluid in the
pouch seems to dampen the vibration like the Notepad does.
I also added one of the C7 Audioquest power cords which
also seemed to improve the sound.Keep Tweaking.... :-)
