I just wanted to thank all the forum members for information about the Toshiba DVD players. I recently had my old Denon CD player die in my budget system at work (Nakamichi RE-3 Receiver, Kef Q10 speakers) and was looking for a replacement. I purchased a Denon DVD for $80 on clearance from Magnolia Hi-Fi and it sounded so-so, but then it died after 26 days of ownership (was accepted for return without a problem). Frankly, I was actually kind of happy because the thing was very noisy when playing discs.I was ready to drop $300 on a NAD or Marantz CD player to get something decent and in the meantime was using this really old phillips portable CD player. I was lamenting that I really might want to replace the KEF's as they didn't sound very good anymore. So I stumbled across the threads on the Toshiba DVD players and low and behold found that my local Costco had the SD-K770 (relabeled 4000) in stock for $39.99.
I can't even describe how much better this player sounds than the Denon, not to mention the Phillips portable. The transport is also silent when playing discs. I would have been happy if the Marantz or NAD CD sounded this good for $300, but for $40 I'm ecstatic. My only gripe about the player is the display stinks, but I can live with that.
I took the $260 I saved and bought a floor model M&K KX-10 sub for $270.
Follow Ups:
There are some internal pics of the SD-K770...looks like the circuit boards were designed so that they could fit a VCR in the chassis.PeAK
Just because you've been touched by the reliability demons...it would be best if you left the unit powered on continuously for at least a week (beware of lightning storms) to screen out infant mortality .To disable the auto-power-off feature, just leave a regular CD in the tray.
Hi Cary,The model SD-K770 you mention..... is this a 220V version? I have been trying for a long time to find the 220/240 volt equivalent of the SD-4000 and SD-3990 models. Any information you may have on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Based purely on the timing of a recent Press releases , the equivalent SD-4000 model should be SD-270e. Last year's model is probably the SD-260e based upon the colour (silver) and the timing of the announcement in April 2006.
This is a 110v US version. Toshiba just renumbers it so that it's other retail stores don't have to price match Costco.
