In Reply to: Anyone compared the Toshiba 3950 with the Panasonic S47 for audio CDs? posted by Raver on May 18, 2005 at 10:16:54:
Get the Tosh.. AND.. do the swenson mods.. couldn't be simpler.. and I believe his web site Photo instructions are still up.
Once done the Sonics go from above average.. to good luck finding a significantly better sound.

One problem for me is that the Toshiba 3950 is not available here in Italy, I should buy it from USA, and have it shipped here (expensive)then it would be 120VAC and it would need a transformer or a mod in the power supply.
The Panny is available here and it's rather cheap too. I think I will chose this simpler solution for now.
I have a Panny s35 that is much nicer than my Tosh 3960 quieter transport and fuller sound, less grain. Both are unmodded, the only thing I do well with a soldering iron is burn myself. I had an extended email correspondence with another Italian inmate over the Panny unit. I believe he eventually bought the s47.
Do a search of inmates for 'Beppo' nice person and fun to talk to.

5 minutes after posting, the drive motor in the Panny came to a SCREECHING halt- back on the Tosh sounds nice but I already miss the Panny
Guess I should just keep my mouth shut as the audio gods are now extracting a painful revenge
