My Denon DCD1500II was not reading disks when it is left on a long time so I thought it wouldn't hurt to have a alternate. I came accross this Sony 507ESD in a thrift store for $25.00. It's missing the remote but that's not that big a deal to me, since I came of age in the era of vinyl, so I tend to just pop a CD in an listen. I tested it on my Grado SR60 heaphones and it sounds good as far as I can tell. Anybody know anything about this player?I understand that is is next to TOTL, behind the 707ESD. Mfg. date is 1988. It shares the 8x/18bit Philips digital chip with the 707. Supposedly this chip was highly respected. Build quality looks very good on this unit. Even if its sound quality can be beat by a cheap DVD player but you sure don't get the build quality of this machine.
Follow Ups:
I owned one of these for over 10 years.Never gave me a moment of trouble.
Solidly built too. I liked the Disc Memo feature that let you name the disc.
That fact that this thing is still working is a testament to its reliability. The only thing that I can find wrong is that the trey is a little sticky. Any tips on the disk memo feature? I don't have a manual. Sony still stocks the remote and sells it for $60.00.
Re Dsic Memo.you hit a specific sequence of keys, nothing complicated, to get into the program mode. I'm sorry I can't remember exactly how. If I saw the remote it might jog my memory
You had to enter each character one by one by scanning through the alphabet until you arrived at the correct letter.
There was a limit to the memory, approx. 200 total discs I think.
You can also program custom index points. I found this handy with those few CD's (like Prince's Lovesexy) that play as one continuous track. It remembered the Disc Memo settings by looking at the number of tracks and total disc length.

I upgraded the caps in the power supply, audio section, and digital section. I also replaced the stock opamps with OPA2604 now this older CD player sounds really nice, nothing like before. The 508ESD has a really nice transport in it.
Thanks for the very useful info. I was wondering about mods. Since this player was fairly expensive for it's day, I suspected that is was not as comon to mod. At the price I paid, trying some mods makes perfect sence. I had also wondered if it would make a good transport. Thanks for answering that!I also found that Sony still stocks the remote control.
You got a nice find there. Late 80's ES players from Sony were very useful. Not the last word in musicality, but many other strengths are to be enjoyed; detail, lower-end slam is second to none and if you like an open, dynamic sound - there you have it.Other aspects of this machine are impressive too; reads discs at lightning speed. When you select the next or previous track, there is only a fraction of a second delay. A fine array of features (not that you'll ever use them..) are on hand. And if you have a universal remote you can program it to work with a variety of Sony codes. If you have a Harmony remote you can make it operate every feature.
I had noticed that it could jump tracks quickly. It did seem to be quite detailed. It will be and interesting contrast to my Denon DCD1500II. I do like dyanmics. That's why I have high effecency speakers with a big solid state amp. Thanks for the tip about the universal remote!
