Or are there other choices that are better? I am giving up my Panasonic A120 because while it performs admirably, it doesn't play CD-Rs or CD-RWs.If this is THE model to get can someone point to a link of tweaks?
I see the Toshiba 3960 is currently on sale for $50 through Amazon.
Thanks for the assistance.

I didn't try the mods, besides some serious damping, but it could not even better my computer - mp3s, mind you - as a source.
In comparison to an original Rega Planet - apples to dog droppings....
You might look at the Panasonic DVD-S77, which was just released and has high expectations. While it's just a bit over $200, it will likely be worth it. Plus it has HDCD.
woop... I guess it is being discounted to $200
The Tosh sounds fanatastic for its price, and even beyond. Mine is unmodded except for the vinyl tile tweak. But it does have some of those issues. Long loads, sometimes just stops. Mine has played all the discs I tried though.
I also have the Panny S47 that I bought when I owned the Benchmark (now sold). I bought it based on the Benchmark connection but now it is for sale. I went with a tubed cdp. Contact me if you cannot find one, they were pretty rare at one time.
I've been using a 3960 that I modified with the Vinny and Swenson mods for about 9 months now. It has performed flawlessly for me. I think it sounds very nice, and has a great picture for DVD's. I may be one of the lucky ones since quality control seems to be an issue.
Not bit perfect, won't play some of my Redbooks (just stops), very long load and search times.Call the Benchmark DAC people on the phone and ask them which Panasonic they were using at the Show. That one is bit perfect, and I'd have to assume their model plays CD-R/RWs.
Otherwise, I would personally buy a lowish end Pioneer - not the cheapest, just at the bottom of or near the Elite line. People mod those, too, so you could research mods and then buy one that people are working with.

The Panasonic S47 is what they were using. I don't know if it was black or silver and if the color makes a difference or not.
The S47 could be hard to find these days, but the F87 changer is still available. The F87 sounds quite a bit better in stock form than the Toshiba 3960 as well (at least the one I tried anyway).
It's listed on the Panasonic online store as having a special price but when one clicks on the button to add it to the shopping cart nothing happens.
I don't know, but I suspect so. I don't see it in stores anymore and there is a new model coming out, the S97, which looks like a replacement.
Here you go.. Black S47 for $70.
Years back I bought a Panny RV-32 DVD for around $109. Nice picture but, I wasn't pleased with the Redbook Audio(it claimed to use the 24bit-192khz BB dac). Hopefully the S47 is much better. If you're going to use an external DAC, then having a bit perfect transport would be very beneficial for audio. If you're using analog outs, I think your ears would be the most important deciding factor.
Find places that offer no-hassle return policies.I use a modded Tosh 3950, but, love the combination of great sound and ability to play with modding. I thought the Harman Kardon DVD-22 (under $200) sounded excellent with Redbook. I recommend you compare the audio of the HK DVD-22 to your other candidate(s).

Dear Friends,Thank you all for your great and kind support.
If this Panny is enough good as a source for a Benchmark DAC1 at a show it should be enough for my Behringer src 2496 at my home.
Now the search is on for a cheap but nice digital connection.
I would like to take profit of your courtesy more and more.
Do you have any experience of cheap but good coaxial or toslink?
Just that link and I am done.Thank you very much indeed dear friends.
Kind regards,
Dear Sir,Very interesting post of yours this one.
Do you mean that in a Show (which on are you referring at?) Benchmark has been demonstrating its DAC1 using a cheap Panasonic dvd player as a source?
This would be most interesting.
If anyone knows the precise model it would be very interesting indeed for me as I am looking for a cheap dvd player that can be a acceptable cd transport as well.Anyway thank you very much for your valuable post.
Kind regards,
When I owned the 3960 - for a few short weeks, there were a lot of CDs that the player wouldn't handle. Some of the CDs were those that I mastered on the computer. However, there were a few discs - factory pressed music CDs that also created problems and only the first few tracks would play - and the rest of the CD was toast.I'm using the Magnavox (458?) that cost me $29 - and I'm running it with the DACs on the player fed into my Pioneer Elite receiver. Sounds pretty good to me. In fact, I almost think it sounds better than the 3960 did.
there are mods posted for both.
