Just bought a 16 yr old Esoteric P10 transport and it only has rca coax or optical fiber out.(1) Which insure better transmisson of digital data? (2) coax seems to be labeled on more recent equipment as spdif. Which I gather to mean 110 ohms as opposed to coax 75ohms. Will it be even better to used spdif cable (110 ohm) for the connection between my transport and not even a yr old Lavry DAC? The Esoteric manual specifically mentions 75 ohm coax as what is used, (or use optical.) I would have liked to have paid more attention to the fact that the Esoteric didnt have 3 pin which I think would have been best? I remember reading somewhere that maybe it was Toslink that isnt very good as susceptible to signal degradation I think.
Follow Ups:
There have also been a number of threads discussing the use of true glass toslink cables (as opposed to clear plastic) being superior to all but very expensive wires, available on ebay cheap. A search on Cable Asylum using glass toslink should turn up the info.
glass toslink is best. that all I have using, Glass has all the bandwidth you need, less noise, less tension, more smoothness, more inner detail.
go glass!
HowdyA search will come up with lots of info.
Everything depends on the quality of the two pieces of equipment's implementation of the transceivers for the S/PDIF and the TOSLink. In general TOSLink has lower bandwidth than S/PDIF and hence MAY have more jitter, but that depends on the equipment, conversely if you have any ground loop issues TOSLink can be better than another ground loop.
S/PDIF uses 75 ohm unbalanced, is AES/EBU that uses 110 ohm balanced.
Even if you use the wrong impedance for typical in home short distances it's not the end of the world.
thanks for that ,, Ted,, If you would indulge me,,, check this out and see what you make of it ,,just to get to the bottom of this. is it mis info or what? heres the link,, a page at local electronics supply, scroll down the page and theres the "gold" spdif 110 ohm rca,,,& right above it is the blue color digital which is the only indication that it has anything to do with digital. Doesnt indicate ohm although does say double shielded in the add although when I bought it notes triple shielded. I just like to see more info on the product.. so wondering if the money couldnt be better spent on another manufacturer.
HowdyBeing a moderator here doesn't mean I'm an experert :)
I don't know anything about that manufacturer, but those prices don't strike me as out of line for those kind of cables.
I wouldn't worry about the impedance at all at those price points: if it sounds good why worry? If it sounds bad (which I don't think it will), what have you lost?
At those price points you might also consider your local RadioShack: their gold cables are pretty reasonable for the price.
