Hello.I am trying to set up my SEX amp so that when I insert my headphones into the jack, the speakers shut off. I looked around for advise on this and found This post from Paul...
: If you look closely at the headphone jack, while inserting a plug, you can see the
: switch action. There is a metal finger (actually three of them) that is lifted up by
: the side of the plug shaft, when inserted. The signal from the output transformer
: goes to this finger, so the finger touches the plug, powering it. When the finger
: is up, one end of it is detached from a contact - that contact should go to the
: speaker, so that it gets detached when the plug is in.
:
: The plug has three metal surfaces, called "tip", "ring" and "shield" - the main
: part of the shaft is the shield. Signal positive goes to the tip and ring, the shield
: and the signal negatives are grounded. The grounds do not use the switch, so be
: careful there.
:
: Hope that helps, I won't have time to go into more detail until next week.So I looked for more posts but found nothing helpful. Anyway, it appears my attempts to implement this have failed. The closest I have gotten is when I simply removed the two resistors and conductor that connect the left and right terminals of the headphone jack. This resulted in the signal droping from the speakers when I insert the headphone plug, however there is no music coming out of the headphones.
My headphones are Sennheiser HD 650 and they work fine when plugged into a SEX amp with standard wiring.
Any ideas what I need to do to get this to work? Paul or anyone?
Thanks so much for helping me out and letting me take up your valuable time.
PJ sent me samples of a new headphone jack a zillion years ago, that will shut off the speakers when the headphones are plugged in and still retain the 120ohm series load on the output for headphones. I can send you one to try and maybe Paul can talk you through how to connect it. I'm really up to my a** in alligators for the rest of the week getting gear ready fo the Stereophile show. Might be best to check in with me early next week.

Thanks Doc! I'll ping you next week.
Doc, you want to put up a part number? I'd be interested in this too.

I have been thinking of adding a mechanical switch, but if it could be accomplished with a different jack that would be great. By the way, I thought the manner in which the 120 ohm resistor was fitted into the present switching jack was pretty neat.
