Well, I've had an M-4 in my main stereo from 1980 until 6 months ago. I bought it new when I was in the USAF in Germany. The retail price was $750, but was under $400 through the BX Overseas catalog.It is one of two pieces from that stereo that is still in working condition (along with a Yamaha T-1 tuner). The Nakamichi 660ZX cassette deck, Yamaha C-4 pre amp, Revox B795 turntable - all dead or dying. But the M-4 still delivers.
It no longer is in my main system. It is now used to drive Thiel CS-3.5 main speakers in my wife's Karaoke/DVD system in the Family Room. It was always a good match for the Thiels (which were bought in 1989).
Yes, there was a time when Yamaha made pretty nice electronics. The M-4 is a wonderful example of this.
