Dear allLike all of us, after 10 something years..I would like to upgrade my power amp. Currently I use the VTL deluxe 300 to drive my proac 1.5 and the pre is cary SLP94. My choices go to CARY V12R other (please advise), ARC VT100 MKII, or others.
I listen mostly with Jazz and a little classical with my Linn LP12 (oldies but goodies).
Follow Ups:
The Audio Research VT-100 MKII would be a downgrade - I moved from that amp to a pair of 450s. The 450s are fundamentally the same amp as the 300s with a number of enhancements. They use new transformers and better passive components. That increased power to 450 watts, improved resolution and tightened the low end. I have yet to hear better bass from a tube amp.
...the VTL MB-185s. They would have all of the new stuff that's in the MB-450s and more than enough power to drive your ProAcs at a much lower cost. You will be astonished at the improvement over your older VTL amps.
but I'm not convinced that buying a new pair of them would be cheaper than upgrading his existing amps.
What is the best option for the upgrade? What is the most cost effective to start?
which is less expensive - new MB-185s or upgrading your 300s to MB-450 specs? I don't know the answer. I would recommend checking with a VTL dealer to get the answer. The 450s are among a very few amplifiers in my experience that exude that ineffable quality of "authority" with their effortless power reserves.Good luck in your search.
What are you looking for in the way of change?
I feel that the VTL in either triod or pent are a little bit lacking in term of bass weight and bass detail. I love a this amp in term of midrange and the high resolution part. And I think that may be the CARY amp might match better with my pre (cary slp94).
