Many times you have a leaky bumblebee capacitor or capacitors that feed the volume control and what happens is,it will make it cut out like you have a bad pot because you are putting DC voltage on the volume control which is a no no.
Take your DC volt meter and check and see if you have DC voltage on each pin to ground of the volume pot.If you have .5vdc or more on any of the pins,you need to change out those caps first.
