The Future of the Asylum

Posted by Rod M on December 31, 2016 at 16:18:00:

Thanks to our intellectually-gifted, practically-minded, and financially-generous inmates, the Asylum has grown to be a valuable resource to audiophiles all around the globe.

Since March 1999, literally 7,924,588 posts have been made as of noon today. As these posts are archived, an amazing reservoir of knowledge has been collected and stored for the current and future needs of audiophiles around the World. The 'Brain Trust' of the Asylum is truly amazing! Thank you all for your contributions.

Managing this enterprise is no walk in the park. On a typical day, 22,000 to 24,000 people visit the site looking at up to 1.25 million pages of information. While we've made many improvements over the years in terms of software and hardware upgrades, our job is not done and we have an ambitious plan for next year.

As many of you know, the transition from using computers to surf the net to phone and tablets has accelerated. Our site has always been friendlier than many, but it's not a fully responsive site for mobile users. Soon, it will be. Over the past month, we hired expert consultants to help in this endeavor. An initial prototype has been developed and we're in the process of integration, which is no small task.

That's why we need your help. We intend to have a beta version the forums and posting applications done over the next few weeks. Then, we'll ask for your feedback. God knows, we don't want an Orange Monday revolt!

However, moving the forums to a mobile, responsive platform will be just the beginning. We expect that it will take at 6 months and perhaps as long as a year to fully complete this task for all the various apps.

So, today, we're launching our 2016 Year-End Campaign.

Our goal is to generate enough support to kick-off our funding drive for the 2017 calendar year and to catch up on our on-going deficit since investing in preliminary actions, all necessary to prepare for the massive software project this year.

You see, even though we provide a great place for people to learn and share, the bills continue to mount. That's why our goal for phase one of this campaign is to raise $12,000 by January 31. To put that into perspective, if every inmate who used the Asylum's resources yesterday chipped in $5.00, we'd quickly raise that amount (and much more).

If you would be willing to help, you will be a part of making possible for the Asylum to step into 2017 with confidence. With adequate funding to support the software project and needed contractors, we can commit to moving forward.

Update on Contributor gifts: Sadly, we'd run out of both hats and yoyos over the summer. It took too long to replenish the stock. I apologize for the delay. However, new supplies arrived this week and everything has been shipped. If by chance, we owe you a gift and you haven't received it by January 10, 2017, let me know.
