Over the past 4 years I've probably shipped 200+ items via Fedex Ground and I've never had a problem of any kind. Obviously therefore I have not had to deal with the type of problem you're having. My wife works in an office where they use Fedex overnight thousands of times a year with rarely a problem. When they do apparently the customer service is great. Of course, that's a sizable commercial account with some clout.
But all in all I'd have to say that Fedex does a great job in spit of your unfortunate experience.
