I would not say that the Cardas Golden Reference softens the sound. I find the cable to be very dynamic and extended. In my system it had a slight emphasis in the midrange which gave almost all recorded material a euphonic nasaly sound. Keep in mind it was not pronounced but it was there. Having a system slightly on the warm side of neutral the GR were not a good fit in my system, but I can see why people like the cable. It sounds very good and if you like their sound then more power to you.
