I must modify the hyped review by Dave L. I didn't quite get the euphoria he experianced, but still a very solid product that is underpriced.
I won't go through everything he said, but I will add:
The two spiral ribbon tweets operate togeather to lower distortion, but compared with Focal and dynaudio drivers don't have much excursion, and the mid and lower treble regions aren't as detailed or pronounced.
Where the two 7" ribbons take over the midbass is great, but handing off this type of driver to a cone successfully is amazing. The problems is, is that compared to his ST/R and other designs, upper midbass and midbass isn't quite as detailed because of the range the 12" woofer handles, vs a smaller driver on other designs.
The bass, although great for it's class, falls well short of the ST/R. I'd like to classify it as: "Abundant, powerful, and detailed" but not punishing and bruising like larger systems.
I like the RM2's for many reasons, and think that if these were marketed by Genesis or Wilson they would sell for $6,000 a pair in abundance. The problem I think is VMPS does not have the budget to run full page Stereophile ads and doesn't have some avante-garde design house add cabinetry eye candy. They don't pander to the ultra rich only. The lack of this media hype is a good thing IMHO. It allows VMPS to produce a product that is beyond competative in it's price bracket.
If you are in the market for the following speakers: audition the RM/2's:
Vandersteen 3, Paradigm Studio 100's, Martin-Logan Aierius,Monitor Audio, even Magnepan 1.6's.
I feel the combination of talents the RM'2's have, give them qualities that exceed the competition.
Of the lot, I have no qualms about saying the VMPS bass is by far the most powerful. The sound is closer to Maggie than Paradigm, so the ribbons have greater speed than the Paradigms or the Vandys.
Bottom line: a well excecuted hybrid with ribbon speed, and subwoofer- class 20hz bass. Very open, detailed and transparent. They are not brutal however. Best on these are strings, horns, and Jazz. These will do heavy metal, but to 116db, not enough to satisfy headbangers.
