I'm not sure what this other review is about, being new to this forum. The Silverline Sonata, old version, is unquestionable one of the greatest buys in the history of audio (no exaggeration). I have owned one for several months and they are excellent speakers. Very coherent, almost no distortion or compression at high levels, transparent without being edgy, very revealing of poor sources, comparable essentially to speakers costing many $$ more. Construction is excellent so I cannot understand the problems described in the other review. Also I can't open Mr Coherent's review, why is that ? Anyway, I love, love, love these speakers. I have spoken to Mr Yun many times and he is a good guy, although I can perhaps acknowledge he is not 100% tuned to our business practices. But perhaps I understand his point of view. Anyway, if you have problems with his products, or need to replace a driver, he asks more questions than he should. But in the end he delivers. But aside from that, these speakers are almost seamless, and are easily driven by any amp you care to mate them with. I can only say good things about them. Again, transparent, revealing, coherent, balanced, dynamic... What more can anyone ask ? Take the grilles off and they dissappear completely from your room. Shortcomings are very very few, and very very minor. I am not one of those guys who exaggerates the virtues of the products they buy. So here. Bass extension is somewhat less than published, more like flat to mid 30s as opposed to 20 Hz. Few speakers really deliver 20 Hz, you know. Appropriately I mean. But with this speaker there is definitely output below 30 Hz, so musically they sound good. The bass is there and tight if poperly driven. There is no midbass bloom (ugh!). So it is low disortion bass, which is not frequent at this price range! No other shortfalls to speak of. Oh yes, perhaps the midrange is a little recessed for my taste. Or perhaps it's just the recordings, as I've heard other people say. In any event, on some recordings you will wish the singer where two steps in front. On other recordings it;s just fine. Construction quality is very good, of course the veneeers are real, how could they be otherwise ? This speaker is not made anymore and I have no clue whether the new ones sound better or worse. Any reviews out there ? I believe these speakers are better than other famous speakers out there costing north of $10K, and which are doubtlessly very good, such as the Audio Physics Virgo, all of the Dunlavys, the Thiels 6, not to mention the abominable fourth order crossover types such as the B&Ws (#@!$%^). To beat this requires a SoundLabs electrostat, an Avalon Eidolon perhaps, a Vandy 5 if very well set-up, or a top Maggie in certain areas, but the Silverlines will beat most everything else I have heard out there. Oh, just so the few psychos out there know, I will not respond to personal or tasteless criticism when I post a review. The rest of you please feel free to comment. Hope this is useful.
