for the HWS-586
I bought these speakers brand new, with no audition, at a price that I thought would allow me to sell them if I didn't like the sound, and not lose too much cash. (I got what I thought was a "good deal")
Turns out the deal was good. Me keep long time.
The first point is that the dealer told me they were sandlewood and when I got them they were piano gloss black. I called and they apologised. Apparently, there are no more sandlewood versions - all are black now. If that's not the case, don't email me and spoil the illusion. They gave me a credit that I thought was about equal to the mistake.
The looks are very nice though. They defintely have that high end Chinese look thing goin' on. Real pretty. I really like ports on the front for many reasons. Placement and sound advantaged a- plenty in my humble opinion.
The Hyperions are replacing the pair of Merlin TSM MXe speakers I just sold. I loved those Merlins but I just couldn't afford to keep them. A long sad story we can go into over beers some time.
The Hyperions are connected to a good quality amp straight-lined to a Oppo BDP-83. No pre-amp or processor.
The review of the sound is simply this: they are about 70% as good as the Merlins for 25% of the price. That's if we're comparing retail to retail. If you've ever heard the Merlin speakers, you know what that's saying about these speakers. Bargain.
You want more? OK. The Hyperion 586 has a warm sound. Really nice and laid back. Like the Stereotimes review said: "a little soft." The high end of this speaker's range is there and not the least bit harsh. Not bright or gritty. They give you what you need. The sparkling inner detail and almost eerie depth and weight of the Merlin TSM is not there. But did I mention these are less than a quarter of the cost?
I have them on stands in a small room and they manage a nice clear soundstage, remain fairly (not fully) transparent, and give the listener outstanding lower-mid detail. I played them both full range and cut off at 80hz with a sub. I was very pleased with the way they sound full range. I would like to cut them at maybe 60hz and use a sub for only the lowest range but the system I'm using right now won't let me do that.
For the money, these speakers are letting me down easy.
Product Weakness: for less than $700, NOTHING Product Strengths: fit & finish, sound quality, price
