For you, would there be any reason to prefer lower distortion OUTSIDE the nulls

vs inside the nulls?

As far as I can tell with mucking around with the formulae, the nulls are determined by Lofgren A by setting minimum and maximum groove diameter. If I set the inner groove at 57.5mm (DIN), I will move the inner null from 66 to 63.1. That means that for the final 6mm (let's call it the last 7-8% or 2mins of a long record), the average distortion will be twice as high as with Stevenson. If the inner groove is set to IEC, the average distortion during that period will be 4x as high as Stevenson, and higher than at any point between the nulls.

I personally tend to use Baerwald/LofgrenA DIN except on a few arms where Stevenson just seems to sound better (and I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why) but I haven't yet been convinced by the absolute benefit of "lowest peak distortion" - it could be that peak happens where I don't want it to... one could just as well say one wants the lowest average distortion or the lowest peak distortion over the last third, or what have you.

I have on my "list of things to do" an effort to build a spreadsheet to calculate the effect on distortion of differing stylus-groove speed by radius to add it to the mess.

I agree with you on the Conrad Huffman generator - one of the great free things out there.
It's on my list to print one up for every arm I have.
