I'm old enough to remember the era and there wasn't enough attention paid to simple arm geometry then, though all that needed to be known was known. Many arms on made-up combination tt-arm units are simply mounted too far from the disk center to achieve optimum overhang, or are alternatively too short. That's one of the things I meant by incompetently designed.
One nice thing about arms like the Tri-Planer and some of the VPIs is that the pivot to center distance can be varied, to a limited extent.
