bought speakers without hearing them first (stats); HATED them. playing upstream brought improvements, but never satisfaction.
lesson learned:
of all things to buy for a stereo, the most essential to audition are speakers. (biggest influence on performance, and most demanding logistically in event of dissatisfaction).
