Hi Play-mate and needtubes,
I think in general you are right. I used JRiver in ASIO mode quite happily for quite a while. And I thought the same as you - jitter is down to low levels as the DAC does the work on clocking its signal. So all is "well with the world". The journey is over :)
The thing is, I have found that "everything" matters. After you listen to your setup for a while, especially if you have a PC, you can "play". Try things... Try cPlay. Try Jplay. Try JRiver (with ASIO and WASAPI). Try a laptop. Try linux. Try Apple (if you can afford it). Try an audio "appliance".
Here's what I have heard so far...
-> JPlay rules. I have to admit that I haven't tried a dedicated audio player (ie. appliance). The closest I have come is a laptop running Fidelize, JRiver and JPlay. And to be honest I just might try an "appliance" next. But for now I have my reference. I think cPlay is much the same as JPlay (from what I've read) but I haven't tried it. I'm "happy" :)
-> RF matters... Any switching power supply adds noise. CPUs, Video cards, etc. even make a difference. Use as sparingly as possible.
-> Run in memory. SSDs are okay, hard drives suck - unless it runs in memory :) Even then I'm not sure. But in some cases, who knows.
The bottom line is... Sorry... It's all a toss up. How many of us who are doing CA use the same setup? Not many.
All I know is I try to (and do) keep getting closer to music. It's a journey we all (unfortunately) have to take. I wish there was a panacea. If you can do it for free - do it - if that's what works for you. If you want more you'll have to search and experiment.
And hopefully the above things I've learned help!
All the best,
Jeff
