I'd use a big mother amp. The Minis are omnis rather than line sources so fall off at 1/R^2, you'll be several dB further down at a normal listening distance than you would with the tall line sources, with perhaps a bit more room gain. Magnepan used a 2000 watt/channel Bryston at their CES demo.
For nearfield desktop listening, the situation is reversed, you're listening up close so power requirements should be modest.
