Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

RE: Fostex 206E

4.5" = maybe (?) - Carl didn't seem to like 206 but he runs a lot of power into traditional K plus sometimes transform EQ

here's Karlson's 1955 8" coupler - probably tuned 85Hz small signal - a coupler with double its volumes would have about 1/2 octave more LF

I suspect 206 ran out of linear excursion - here's his comments

K8 Original Factory(w 206E) is excellent as a limited range surround speaker. Running full range however, it fails to render a realistic kick drum, toms, cellos and 3lower octaves of the organ. For example: It played the kick drum essentially w/o the fundamental at 78 to 80 db compared to actual levels of 88 to 93. Whats worse, is the kick drum was rendered with an level below that of toms -- there went the dynamics. BTW the toms were compressed around 6 db. The snair was played at its correct level. Some good attributes: It does excellent on finger style acoustic guitar, strummed acoustic guitar, vocals and most brass instruments. We added a subwoffer, crossing at 80hz, 12 db/octave and we improved the drum set. Most other speakers tested faired worse including one burn out failure on the kick drum test.
More later on the X8 and high aspect K8, tapers etc.

baffle angle appears around 28 degrees from vertical and 3-slit vent port panel ~10 degrees from vertical.

sidewalls were grooved to accept the internal panels - this may be from around 1955.

internal width measures 10.75"; external width 11.75".

wings were clipped to clear the baffle.

I'm not sure if the wings were radial but "probably" - will have to try to get good measurements then compare- if not clipped then travel wouild end about 3/4" from the bottom

It has a lively Karlson sound on some organ, guitar, piano, etc. "reverberation" is what gives the illusion of realism in recordings -- A Karlson with its aperture truncated or damping in the front chamber might pretty bad.
